The OFCFNC extends its deepest sympathies on the passing of Garry John Schipper, father of former player and current sponsor Justin.
Passed away March 24th 2010.
Aged 64 - Much loved husband of Jan. Loving father of Clinton and Justin. Father-in-law of Kati and Kelly. Adored Pa of Jack, Acacia and Alby.
Memories are ours to keep dearly loved brother-in-law of Chere, Jeff (dec.), Bruce and Caroline. Life's Gentleman, one of the best. Dearly loved brother-in-law of Jean and John Taylor. Loved uncle of Sam and Rob,
Ange and Eric; and Joelene. No more stormy seas !
The above is an extract from the Herald Sun (Monday 29th March)
Garry played for football for Powelltown in the YVMDFNL and was a keen follower (and club supporter) of son Justin when he played for the OFCFNC. Gary's brother Roy is a Life Member of the Powelltown Football Netball
Club.
Whilst a genuine gentleman he was a figure to be reckoned with in the flesh. "20+ stone in the old school, and as a policeman, when the commissioner needed a battalion, he could send him in 'one up'" (Sly of 3aw radio's
comment today)
Garry was a very keen sailor, participating in the Sydney to Hobart yacht races on numerous occasions. In one trip he was washed overboard but he retained his Dolphin torch which enabled him to be rescued at sea. He
became the focus of the advertising campaign during that period for Dolphin torches. Following this event, he became an ambassador for safety at sea through his work with Stormy Seas safety gear.
He was nicknamed by many of his friends as "Big Schipp", to distinguish between he and Justin when they were together.
From everyone associated with our club, players, officials & supporters, we offer our deepest condolences to Justin and his family and friends.
Vale Garry Schipper !
