YARRA RANGES FNL
Of interest to Alexandra also Thornton – Eildon and Yea football followers is the Yarra Ranges FNL’s possible plan to merge with the eight team South East Football Netball League in 2019 as reported in the “Mountain Views Mail’ 13/3 and other outer suburban newspapers. One option under consideration is that five of the SEFNL teams join a “premier” promotion and relegation division with first division clubs Olinda-Ferny Creek, Healesville, Woori Yallock, Upwey-Tecoma and Wandin. A second promotion and relegation division would consist of the remaining three SEFNL clubs, five current first division YRFNL clubs plus second division clubs Gembrook-Cockatoo and Yarra Glen. This would leave the three local clubs along with Kinglake, Seville, Yarra Junction and Powelltown in a seven team non promotion and relegation competition. See chart below. The draft submitted to the clubs also suggests recruiting three more clubs to the lower division to bring all divisions up to the near perfect 10 team competitions.
All sounds good but if unable to recruit new clubs to div. 2 and or the possible loss of an existing club or clubs, would Alexandra be forced to travel to Tooradin on Western Port Bay to play in the first division, a round trip of 300 km’s on C grade roads south of Healesville . The future for football in Alexandra will eventually be decided by AFL South-East, our controlling body whom I trust will give the northern clubs serious consideration as it was their predecessor the VCFL that sent these clubs south in 2005.
