"A gorgeous day at Memorial Oval on Saturday saw four hotly contested games of Goulburn Valley League Netball as Euroa played host to Rochester Tigerettes.
A GRADE:
Euroa started the game off strongly, scoring off the first centre pass then immediately breaking Rochester to score again. Deanne Tuppen was on fire from the first whistle, holding strongly and shooting beautifully from GS.
The Euroa girls maintained an advantage of around five goals for most of the match, but Rochester were never going away, always surging to threaten the Magpie ladies. They were able to hold on though, through the agency of some strong defence by Kelly Hill and Elyssa Flint, along with some solid mid-court play from youngsters Eliza Hoare and Hannah Broughton and the experienced Kali Frost.
Euroa went on the win the match, 45-39, with best players awarded Hill, Tuppen and Frost for her solid game at WA.
B GRADE
B Grade celebrated Kim Saxon’s 200th game for the Euroa Magpies this week and used this as added motivation for a win.
The defensive pressure applied by Kim and Katie Parkes in the ring was outstanding putting great pressure on the Rochester shooters.
An injury to Sophie Hayes gave Michelle Jesser another chance to play senior netball and her work rate at WD was excellent.
Having held a small lead for the majority of the game, Euroa could not stop Rochester’s run in the 3rd quarter to head into last break 4 goals down.
Determined to get the first win for the season, Euroa went back out fighting and got within one goal, but unfortunately ended up going down 44-48 with the best players being Parkes, Saxon and Sarah Ternes.
B RESERVE
Unfortunately the B Reserve girls went down 28-65.
Sarah Ternes filled a gap in goals and was shooting very well, but unfortunately Euroa couldn't get enough of the ball to her.
Rochester's midcourt were too strong which meant the Euroa defenders were under siege. Emily Quattrocchi competed very well against a much bigger and stronger opponent nonetheless.
14-year-old Olivia Butler did very well at GD after again being elevated from the U17's.
Best on court honours were awarded to Quattrocchi, Butler and Ella Murdoch, who fought gallantly through the midcourt.
UNDER 17's
In the closest match of the day, the youngest Euroa girls got off to a cracking first half, putting a six-goal buffer on the score-board by the long break.
Unfortunately they let Rochester back into the game in the second half, with some poor passing and missed opportunities under the post, and this would cost them dearly, going down 42-44 at the full-time whistle.
Eliza Hoare was at her brilliant best in the centre, running hard all game and constantly providing an option for her team. Emma Burke was fabulous at GS, with great timing and drive onto the ball. Olivia Butler worked over-time at GD and proved she will be a force to be reckoned with down back, and this saw these three young ladies awarded as best players on the day.
Looking forward to a bye this weekend, before we host Mansfield on May 20th again at home, for what is tipped to be four more close matches.
KIM SAXON' 200th
Loyal and long-time servant of our great Club, Kim Saxon, played her 200th GVL game for Euroa Magpies Football Netball Club on Saturday. A talented defender who's notched up this incredible milestone over a decorated career, Kim is a wonderful leader, mentor and Club-person. Playing her early years in A Grade and more recently in B Grade, winning numerous Club B&F medals along the way, coaching and umpiring at times - there is no doubt she always gives 110% for her team and Club. A great presence on the court, and a fabulous person off it - congratulations, Kim. Euroa Magpies are very proud of your achievements."
