The Reserves and Seniors take the tally to three wins in a row whilst the Thirds and Netballers have a Saturday they would prefer to forget.
Bring a friend night was a great success on Friday at Auskick. There were plenty of friends. The Lion Cubs thoroughly enjoyed participating in the drills and really got involved in the matches afterwards. It was a huge success. The Lion Cubs finished the night off with a sausage sizzle. On Saturday the Cubs then played a match at half-time of the Seniors game. South Yarra says goodbye to Anikan because he is moving house.
In the Thirds, Sandown were far more accurate and stronger in the midfield. Presland and Clohesy got a work out in the backline as Sandown had plenty of inside 50s. Donnoli smashed the ball down onto his boot with haste and watched it sail through for a major. Seb set the Barr high when he snagged a goal from the boundary. The Yarras trailed at the final break by two goals. Mills and Knight were fantastic. Cameron continued his goal kicking form with two majors. Accuracy appeared to be the Yarras downfall as their 5 goals was not enough, finishing 11 points behind the Cobras. Final scores 5-10-40 to Sandown 7-9-51.
The Netballers versed top of the ladder, and undefeated Highett. The girls welcomed new recruit Caitlan who will be replacing Rhona as she is unfortunately out for the season. South Yarra wish Rohna all the best with her recovery and putting up with Marnsey's cooking and cleaning. The game was tight for the first quarter, with Highett taking a 5 goal lead into quarter time. The Yarras came out firing in the second, and with tight defence and a well working mid court, we were able to get the lead back to only 2 goals. However, Highett really switched it on after that, and worked seamlessly to extend their lead. The wind picked up in the second half, and the Yarras struggled to stay with the top team, unfortunately going down by 32 goals. All ladies should be proud of their performance on Saturday, as it’s difficult playing with fill ins every week. We are starting to gel as a team, and I look forward to seeing us work harder each week and learn to play together. Thanks to our fill in, Founder of the Lionnesses, Mrs. Simone Draper, who played great in the mid court.
The Reserves were out to revenge last year's preliminary final loss against CPL. Lange had one goal at half-time and then finished the day with 4. Andy Mac was more elusive than Christopher Skase in the 90s, he kicked a hat trick as no opponent could catch him. Graham clunked plenty and booted two. Baxter moved forward and kicked two too. Sharply was too quick for his opponent when he twice replicated the Buddy vs Cale Hooker footrace. Strelec was sublime in the ruck and managed to slot one through. Dorka contributed with a goal. Higgo was stronger than his opponents in the middle and played magnificently. Rossi resembled a python when he applied strong tackles choking CPL's attack. A great team effort saw the Yarras win comfortably by 10 goals.
The Seniors had a David versus Goliath battle on their hands as the Yarras were heavy underdogs, so much so that the TAB weren't taking any bets. The Yarras started off well but CPL weren't going to allow them an easy game. The lead changed hands at every break and never extended further than 4 points. Villella kicked a goal from the boundary and celebrated in front of CPL's crowd. The little man, Cellini racked up many possessions around the ground and kicked three. Finlayson was quicker than a bad Tinder date and he kicked two majors. Maher was brilliant in the middle as he ducked and dodged more than the cast of Dodgeball. Borg kicked a goal and then partied harder than Prince in 1999. Russell and Isherwood kept their opponents very quiet. Coach Devlin praised the team effort that saw the Yarras win 76 to 61. The win even made Owen smile.
