It has been a big preseason at the Den with lots happening.
Big thanks to Owen Pearse and his many helpers at the Masters BBQs which raised some much needed funds for the club.
Owen Pearse has also been teaching the Lion Cubs how to punch at the Auskick clinic. Big thanks to Yo-get-it Frozen Yogurt for agreeing to be a Sponsor of the Lion Cubs Auskick for 2015, supplying participants with vouchers for the whole 2015 season. It was a great start to the season with 16 in attendance including 3 girls. Big thanks to the help from the parents.
Electricians and engineers have been teasing the Yarras with the erection of a light tower. We look forward to it being erected in the near future.
The boys are looking very professional in their new training attire. Thanks must go to Pipes and Tonna for creating the design and our sponsor, The Tower Hotel for putting their name on the back.
The 2015 committee sees Bruce Hill at the helm once again, Tommy Rogers (Secretary) and Anthony Pane (Treasurer) in their 3rd year, after four years on the committee Geoff Zach steps up as Vice President, with Owen Pearse, Brett Devlin and Michael Klomp going around again. We welcome to the committee for the first time Tom Hanney, Kieron Finlayson, Luke Dell’orso, Tom Needham, Mark Phillips, Oliver Khoury, Anton Tidmarsh and Robbie Black.
The coaches for 2015 are Devo (Seniors), Drewy (assistant), Marnsy (Reserves) and Dallas (Thirds).
As voted by the players, the senior captain is Tom Hanney, senior vice captains are Jordan Cellini and Cory Brady, other senior leaders are Tom MacDonald and Tom Rogers. The Reserve captain is the articulate Mr. Nicholas Presland.
The Yarras welcome back its premiership winning team in the kitchen, Barbs and Mouse. If you are around on game day, drop into the best canteen in the league.
We are proud to announce that for the first time at the Yarras, we have a netball team. The ladies have had one win and one loss in their Wednesday night competition. Rohna Chapman is the captain and Jessica Buerckner is the team manager. We wish them all the best for 2015.
The Yarras have recruited well, with Frenchy taking charge on the BBQs he is an early contender for Clubman of the year. Added to the mix are the Irish brothers McDonnell x2, George the Pom, Volpetti, Davies, the Razor (Sharpley), Dimmy, Wyatt, Mohan, Seb, Ridge, Joyce, the old statesman Braybrook, youngsters Hayden and Mangos, Batt, Emery, West, Hume Hwy, Stegga, Donnoli and Stiles. Plus a few sitting in the wings that have not yet put pen to paper. We are pleased to welcome the return of the Mac and the Brown Tree Snake. I have witnessed Devo drool whilst playing with the magnet board as he is very confident about the side he has this year.
The vets have recruited well and big expectations are on the runners up under the tutelage of Bernard Brady.
The season launch was fantastic (would’ve been better if Marnsy had a gag). The Yarras welcomed all the new players and listened to some brilliance from the Mignon.
The hidden destination of the preseason camp was finally announced to the participants well after the arrival time and the boys found themselves in Blairgowrie. The boys ran to an oval where they trained the house down for an hour. The ball zipped around the oval without touching the ground. The boys then enjoyed some time in the water. After that, the boys headed back to the campsite where they all enjoyed snags and some cold beverages. Damo found himself being kicked out of the pub more times than the Kiwis have beaten the Aussies in sport. A horrific storm hit through the campsite meaning that most boys were found without any accommodation and ended up sleeping in cars.
The Yarras played three practice matches against Hawthorn AFC, Swinburne University AFC and Powelltown and learnt:
- The reserves look like a force that could contend on the final day in the season
- Chopper has improved remarkably and will be a vital player
- The new recruits have fitted in well
- Dorca can kick goals
- Hilly won a premiership with Powelltown
