Games from Round 16 (Women) & 20 (Men)

League Women Round 16 – Razzle v Ansett

The Razzle snapped a four game losing streak with a solid 75-60 win against Ansett on Thursday night. The first quarter was level pegging with both teams racking up 20pts for the term, but the Green & Gold began to pull ahead in the 2nd quarter behind Rebecca Murray. Murray (16.9ppg) nailed the first 6 points of the quarter and ended up with 9 of her game high 26 as the Razzle took a 39-29 half time lead. Ruta Valiulyte (10.5ppg) hit 8 of her 16 for the Blues in the third quarter as they tried to stem the tide, but the Razzle kept up the pressure outscoring the Blues 23-18 and cruised home in the last quarter for the win. Murray had help from Lailani Triffitt (21-her best of the season) and Genelle Bridge & Kaylena Marimowa (11 each). Erin Boyd (15.2ppg) led the Blues with 22 and Valiulyte finished with 16.

Eagles v Lightning

A tale of two halves. The Eagles won the first half 44-34, but the Lightning won the second half 44-22 and they won the game 74-66. The Eagles did a commendable job considering they were missing their two leading scorers in Trish Graham & Michelle Friel. Lightning were probably a bit shocked to be trailing at half time due to the efforts of Birds Samantha Sanders (9.2ppg) & Chantelle Lee (6.4ppg), but after the break they rallied big time. Trailing by 12 (52-40) with 5 minutes to go in the third quarter the Lightning clamped down on Eagle scoring and held them without a point while scoring 10 themselves to trail by just 2 with a quarter to play. Hayley Hendricksen (20.3ppg) played a big part in the comeback scoring the last 6pts in the third quarter and the first 6 in the fourth quarter to shift the momentum to the Lightning and they were never headed after that. Hendricksen finished with a game high 31 with Dominique Carbone (12ppg) on 14 and Kira Pendlebury on 11. Sanders & Lee both hit 18 for the Birds with Faye Armstrong getting 12.

Tracy Village Jets v Palmerston Power

The Tracy Village Jets tied their own DBA record of 32 straight games with a thumping 30 point win over the Palmerston Power 87-57. Leading by just 4 at half time 26-22 the Jets hit the after boosters to blow the Power away in the second half 61-35. Erin Geer (13.7ppg) led from the front with 23 points followed by 19 each from Sam Rioli & Tikesa Docherty-Cole. Jeska Matthews (9.1ppg) was best on court for the Power with 17, Samantha Wilson hit 15 and Tulaha Jeffrey had 12. Can anyone beat the Jets? One round to go for them with a game v Lightning next Friday which could well be a preview of the Grand Final.

Men

League Men Round 20 - Razzle v Palmerston Power

Palmerston Power got past the Razzle 88-78 to clean sweep the Green & Gold for the season. The win was the third in a row for the Power as they tune up for a possible playoff spot. Third and fourth place on the ladder will not be decided until the last round and the Power are right in the thick of it. This game was a ‘must win’ match that the Power basically put away in the first half. The Power led 23-17 after a quarter of play and they stepped up the pressure to run off 27 points to just 11 for the Razzle in the second quarter for a handy 50-28 half time lead. The Razzle however, did not lie down and by the end of the third quarter they only trailed by 11 at 62-51. The Razzle did pull one point back in the fourth quarter, but the damage had been done early in the game and their efforts fell short of what they needed. Jesse Bell (21ppg) led the Power with 22, Fisto Bizima 20, Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson 19 and Caleb Pannell 12. Reed Ridder (30.8ppg) led all scorers with 23 for the Razzle and he had support from Brendan Dell (15ppg) on 20 and Joshua Smith 19 (including 5 treys).

Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

The Eagles sent the Tracy Village Jets packing for the rest of the year with a monstrous 107-60 win that capped off the worst season for the Jets in fourteen years. The Birds were off and flying in the first quarter with Alex Fertig (35.1ppg) leading the way with 17 of his total 40 points in the quarter, giving the Birds a 34-14 lead. The Bombers regrouped to outscore the Birds in the second quarter 20-19 but still trailed 53-34 at the half. Things only got worse for the Jets as the Eagles lifted off again to pile on 31 points to 10 to lead by 40 with a quarter to go. End game. Fertig had support from Jordan Sing (22 @ 7.3ppg), Joseph Johnson (13) and Dirk Steenbergen & Shane Harrison (12 ea). Michael MacLean (15.8ppg) hit 12 for the Jets with Jackson Tremlett, Donte Ah Sam & Jake Geer on 11 apiece.

Ansett v Lightning

Brad Davis (18ppg) led Ansett to a close 75-67 win over Lightning thanks to many trips to the charity stripe in the last quarter. The Blues led by 17 going into the last quarter and of their 14 points scored 9 were at the free throw line. They hit 19 for the game against 12 for the Lightning. The absence of big man Craig Martin (24.5ppg) didn’t help the Lightning, but the Blues still had the momentum for the better part of the game. The Blues were up 38-31 at half time and kicked that up to 61-44 by the end of the third quarter. Lightning outgunned the Blues in the last quarter 23-14, but the challenge fell short. Davis finished with 24, Jerron Jamerson 23 and Freddy Webb 14. For the Lightning Austin Kisselev (30.2ppg) tallied 30 and Cameron Bailey & Tom Maher 10 each. Lightning have a must win game next Friday v Uni Rebels who are trying to gate crash into the final four.

Ladder:       Ansett 15-2, Eagles 13-4, Palmerston Power 10-7, Lightning 10-7, Uni Rebels 9-8, Tracy Village Jets 3-15 & & Razzle 0-17

Next week Round 21:Thursday: Palmerston Power v Ansett 8:00pm. Friday: Razzle v Eagles 6:30pm & Lightning v Uni Rebels 8:00pm. Bye Tracy Village Jets
