Great weekend on Magnetic Island. Two teams being Charters Towers and Townsville playing a very good game of football, to the sound of the one of the bands performing for the 40 hour Jammin. I believe one of the first songs they played as we conducted our warm ups was YMCA.....
As a sign of respect, we all wore the black arm bands to support Nev and Anne Growden, after the passing of Nev’s mother. The game was played in true Masters spirit and our thoughts are with Nev and Anne.
Both teams had some new registrations with more interest in the Masters found during the evening as we supported the local economy in a plethora of beverages. The “Spirt of the Masters” for the games went to Kane Logan for making the day a great day for all and providing another opportunity for the AFL Masters to play another great game in another great place. No injuries, no issues, an overall great day, evening and weekend. Some very interesting adventures, even more interesting new friends found and stories not for the faint hearted.
Big thank you to:
Kane Logan, Emma Hennell, Magnetic Island Magpies President and team, for the work to get the day up and running. It was a fantastic day enjoyed by all.
John Davey as he umpired the early games and ours and he did a great job, even sending Macca off for missing a goal from the square.
Julie Mohrwinkel and Noeleen James for work with the raffle. They raised $103.50 that was presented to the President of the Magnetic Island Magpies. A bit more than last year and this was a great effort, with the prise being won by some backpackers.
Steven McLeod and Chris Mohrwinkel with the leadup and team management work, getting the players together it is like herding cats with a cattle prod.
Dean Anderson for preparing us all and coaching the Townsville team.
Brett Starkey for assisting with the teams before the game.
Rod Drew with Sporting Pulse work.
Ted Harrington for the Charters Towers contingent.
Gary Sweet, aka Karl Luck for missing the ferry, but getting the next one just in time to take the field.
The Magnetic Island Wallaby’s for not digging up too much of the ground the night before.....
The next games after this weekend are:
29 Jun 19 – Richmond.
27 Jul 19 – Charters Towers.
XX Aug 19 – Highly likely Mystery Game 1 (Ayr).
XX Sep 19 – Possible Mystery game 2 (Townsville, Charters Towers, Innisfail or Mission Beach).
28 Sep - 05 Oct 19 - AFL Masters National Carnival in Townsville.
Oct/Nov 19 – Cardwell date TBC (Cairns to run this activity this year, with our support).
Lots of time before the next game so book it in and lets see how many different areas we can bring together for another great day/weekend of footy as we lead up towards the National Carnival. In the spirit of the late Bob Hawke, if your boss does not give you that day/weekend off to play in Richmond, they are a bum.....
