Last Saturday, the BWFNHC hosted the 2nd semi final. Thanks to the Bulls for putting on a good day of finals sport. Football wise we had three sides compete on the day with our under 16’s playing St Arnaud, Reserves taking on Donald and Seniors played Wycheproof Narraport. Our Senior boys booked a spot in the Grand Final with a hard fought 11 point win over the Demons.
The Senior game was a close checking, tightly contested affair against a powerful Wycheproof Narraport side who finished the regular season on top of the table for very good reasons, they are a consistent and attacking, skilful team. On Saturday gone our boys were able to stay with the Demons for the first half and we took a three point lead into the main break. The second and third quarters were played in constant drizzle more reminiscent of middle July than the Mallee in early Spring. This made the game a battle of wills with the footy like a cake of soap and both sides playing hard, contested footy. The Navy Blue backline did a sterling job of containing the dangerous Demon forwards while our runners in Aaron Walklate, Jye Sandiford, Ben Walklate, Luke Mulquiny, Josh Ketterer, Sam O’Connor and ruckman Tim Nicolson ensured they made it to contest after contest to compete strongly. The Demons took back the lead early in the third but two important goals from Matt Giri and one from James McGrath then opened up an important buffer that we were able to hang onto and despite Wycheproof Narraport never giving in, our boys efforts were equal to the task and we managed to book a Grand Final berth with an 11 point win. Make no mistake, our boys should be proud of their efforts on the weekend but there is two very talented sides vying to take us on in a Grand Final and our efforts will need to be re-doubled to claim the ultimate prize.
The Reserves will take on Boort in a Preliminary final after suffering a 29 point defeat at the hands of Donald last Saturday. Only eight points in arrears at the main break and only five down at the last change, lapses in concentration allowed Donald to gain the ascendency as the Royals had more numbers at many contests allowing them to generate more scoring opportunities which they took full advantage of. Nathaniel Holmes Brown kicked three goals and Shaun Bowles kicked two while Corey Fanning, Danny Wright and Zane Sullivan all battled hard on the day for the Navies.
The Under 16’s were jumped early by the talented Saints in their 2nd Semi Final and trailed by 23 points at the first change. For the remaining three quarters the Navies kicked 7.7 to the Saints 7.4 and we went down by 20 points. Our boys have lost the respect of no-one and belief in themselves will go a long way as we head deeper into finals. Jed Thompson was lion hearted in the ruck and around the ground while Kyle Postlethwaite and Will Fitzpatrick were good in defence. Trent Cossar, Connor Lee and Nathaniel Holmes Brown also performed well while Ziah Tauali i kicked two in a strong forward line role. Our boys are not far away and a full four quarter team effort from our boys could see them upset anyone on their day.
