The Shellharbour City Suns are celebrating this week with the news the Anna Watson through the Community Building Partnerships Program has granted funds to upgrade the drainage at Jock Brown Oval, Barrack Heights.
Jock Brown Oval is currently listed as a Category 1 ground on the Shellharbour City Councils wet weather register meaning that when it rains the ground is closed for use, being training or playing. With the inability to be granted a wet weather bond due to this categorisation we have had no choice in previous years to move training to indoor training facilities and move game days to alternative grounds or cancel altogether, this has been to the Suns detriment as we cannot raise funds from our canteen or bar and at a disadvantage to our teams as its very disruptive to their preparations.
With the grant we look forward to these disruptions being a thing of the past, we will have new drainage and potentially a wet weather bond and have the ability to ensure no more games are called off or moved due to wet weather, considering AFL is a winter sport.
Today Anna Watson came and met with Club President Chris Nyman, Secretary Megan Fields and players Dan McKinnon, Clint Bowden, Jack Shephard, Nick Bretherton, Dylan Talbot, Scott McAndrew, Mitchell Bates and Kade Kentwell to talk about current issues and to give the Suns an opportunity to say Thank You.
The Shellharbour Suns were also recently the recipients of another grant through Southern Phones and Shellharbour Council to install dugouts at Jock Brown, these will ensure the players have shade during their games and give the ground professional edge during the upcoming AFL Season, kicking off in April 2016.
