Coburg suffered a disappointing 44 point defeat at the hands of Frankston on Sunday. The match was played at Frankston Oval in persistent wet conditions, which meant that once Coburg gave up a 4 goal lead in the first term, they rarely looked like threatening to claw back the deficit.
From the first bounce, it was evident that Frankston were going to cope better with the wet conditions, and their impressive defensive structures and tackling pressure around the ground were the catalyst for a first term which would see Coburg held to just 4 behinds, to Frankston's 4.3.
On a wet winters day like it was, a 4 goal deficit can be a mountain to climb, and this showed for Coburg throughout the rest of the game. Although much improved in the second term, through impressive performances from key players such as Shane Tuck and Matt Arnot, Coburg still went in to half time trailing by 24 points. Two of Coburg's better players for the day in Arnot and McGuane kicked a goal each for the quarter, with recently returned Nathan Thomas adding the third.
The second half began, and no drastic changes in the way the game was being played were made. The weather continued to make it tough for players, and while Coburg never really looked like being blown away in the third term, they also didn't look a lot like making any in-roads to the lead they had been chasing all day. Eventually the lead was increased by 1 goal, and Coburg went in to the final change 30 points behind.
The final term continued with the theme of the day, neither team posing a serious attacking threat resulting in a total of 3 goals for the quarter (2 to Franktston, 1 to Coburg). The damage had been done however, so Frankston could afford to simply close the game down which was made all the more simple by the wet conditions. The final score saw Coburg go down 7.11.53 to 14.13.97 by a margin of 44 points.
Frankston forward Sam Lloyd was the biggest thorn in Coburg's side for the match, kicking 7 goals in a game which saw all other forwards on the ground struggle to make too much of an impact on the scoreboard. For Coburg Matt Arnot and Shane Tuck were the two best players, working well together through the midfield. McGuane also did well from limited chances in the Coburg forward line, kicking 2 goals and looking dangerous on a few other occasions. The experienced Coburg player Ben Clifton put in another solid performance, but ultimately it was a very disappointing result for Coburg who would have liked their chances after such a strong performance the previous week against Geelong. The loss is Coburg's 6th straight to Frankston, and they ended the day winning the innaugral ETU Cup played between the two sides.
