The Eastlake senior season was officially launched on Friday, with the club set to shake things up for the 2019 season.
Among the new announcements, a second women’s team was announced, bolstering the women’s squad by 35 new players.
“Having 60 players over two teams will bring a challenge… [but] there’s more depth in our playing group than ever before,” said newly appointed women’s head coach Jackson Nugent. “This group has a hell of a lot of enthusiasm and commitment… you’ll see a group that’s ready to take on anything and everything.”
The Eastlake senior women will be back to defend the premiership in 2019, led by captain Rohanna Prince. Football Manager Jeff Roberts said the women’s success last year is a “great reward for the club”, with all senior teams hoping to build on their successful seasons last year.
“To be successful we need to have the right people in the right place, to make this club work… To build a successful club you have to have strong foundations, and from there it’s brick by brick,” Roberts said. “Last year we built a castle and this year we’ll continue to add on a few rooms.”
Continuing to do great things both on and off the field, Eastlake are committing to raising funds for cancer research here in Canberra. Men’s head coach Pete McGrath announced the “tackle for a cure” initiative, which will see local businesses and organisations pledge a dollar figure for every tackle the senior club makes. Proceeds will go towards the University of Canberra’s cancer research.
“At some stage we are all going to be touched by cancer in some way or form… these guys are actively trying to find a cure,” McGrath said. “Raising awareness for different initiatives is really important for us.”
The senior season begins on Saturday 13 April, with all senior teams taking on Belconnen at the Adero Law nest in Belconnen. The action kicks off with the rising stars at 9.30am.
Due to a delayed start to the season, the women’s second grade captain and leadership group announcement will be made in the coming weeks.
