Round 15, Sunday August 17

Kensington Gold u/9’s vs Glen Waverley Cheetahs

What a great game!  First up a special mention to Sami who volunteered to help out the Cheetah’s and played with them for the entire match.  Not only did she deliver several long passes to the forwards, she had an important hand in their first goal early in the game.

For the Kensington girls this week was a huge leap forward.  Maeve got the ball across the centre early in the match and took the defenders on with great determination.  She continued her push forward down the right wing and with a glorious strike found the back of the net and the crowd erupted! Mia’s effort in the second half was equally exciting as she weaved her way through the crowded defence and also scored a well- deserved goal.  Shakira was keen to get in on the action too and with superb skill and was unlucky not to score multiple goals herself. It was fantastic to see the girls lift in confidence and determination.  Ella came charging out of defence and sent the ball booming back into the forward half.

Ava’s work to protect the ball and get a pass across to an open team-mate created plenty of chances and Stella likewise showed plenty of finesse with her footwork.  The Cheetah’s showed some excellent team play but Freya and Claudia applied tight pressure in midfield and pushed their opponents out wide making sure they had to work hard for their goals.

A fantastic effort all round! Brilliant passing and playing to position and determination to take the ball forward and get a shot on goal or give it off to a team mate. Well done girls!

Under 11 Blue

Eltham Redbacks (1) v Kensington Blue (2)

It was day out in the country for the Kensington crew this week. Our trek to Eltham was well worth the trip both for the treat of playing on smooth astroturf and the thrill of a well-earned win.

As we enter the last weeks of the season, it is great to see the development of the team and the consistent demonstration of key skills. Everyone is to be commended for knowing what to do and sticking to it! Getting those things right - the kick ins, the throw ins, constant pressure on the ball, and all the other things we focus on at training - all add up to a skilled soccer performance.

The girls played as a team, understanding and valuing the role of each position on field, and the importance to the team of holding position. Many girls had a turn in unfamiliar roles, but their understanding of position made for strong team play.(Amelie was a great example of this as she played well in defence, mid-field and forward today - and nearly scored!).

The girls worked hard, running hard to be first to the ball and tackling and pressuring the opposition all day. There was little ball watching, or running beside opposition players who had the ball. The defensive roles were strong and confident, leaving our goalies with little to do and with lots of support when needed. Thanks to Helina and Shanelle in goal today.

Tarni, was our captain. Our goal scorers were Elena and Helina (but most of the team had shots, keeping the Eltham goalie busy and showing lots of skill!)

Thanks to Nicola for playing with us today - and for giving us the luxury of a sub.

Thanks to our team of chauffeurs who got the girls to and from Eltham - Andrew, John, Mike, Stacey and Louise.

A skilful and deserved win.

Under 12 Joeys

The U12 Joeys hosted Clifton Hill at home on Sunday. Everyone played with spirit in an exciting 1 all draw.

The play during the first half was even with both team having some scoring chances. Our team held their positions well, and the backline of Cate, Sophie, Jemma, and Nicola managed to routinely  break down the attack. We bwent to the break down 0-1.

In the second half, the girls came out with renewed purpose and after troubling their defence a few times scored early in the second term to even things up.

Kensington seemed to  come to life after this, it was great to see the energy and enthusiasm come to the surface. Despite plenty of attack we were not able to convert the field position into a winner. Erica managed the midfield well, moving forward when the opportunity was there to attack. Under instruction, Lola and Hazel each marked their key attacking players out of the game in the second half. Special thanks to Grace and Hazel for playing as subs for us this week.

Well done girls for pressing hard and coming from behind to hold Clifton Hill to the draw.

Under 12 Kangas
Kensington 0 v Pascoe Vale 1

We came up against a strong opponent who were highly motivated to beat us and who came out with instructions to get to the ball ahead of us and this showed on the pitch with the PV players regularly taking the front position against us and hustling into position which was a bit unsettling for our players. Their organisation and passing was also better than ours today. However, the difference between the teams was just one very unlucky goal within the first minute of the game.

The girls showed excellent fight for the remaining 49 minutes but just could not get a clear shot on goals against a very determined opponent who put us under a level of pressure we have not been put under much throughout the season.

It was a good tight game and shows just how close it all is at the top of the table. Special mentions to Elwen who made some forceful breaks forward and to Isobel who showed composure in the defensive half of the ground. Sarah stepping up from Joeys held her right side at the back very solidly and Ruby prodcued one of her strongest games with lots of great passing to players going forward.

Well done today girls just a few weeks to go lets make the most of our successful season.
