Division 1 Report: The Ottawa Swans 1-6 made the long 5 hour trek down the 401 to the big smoke to take on the big boys the Etobicoke Kangaroos 7-0 in a 1st vs 10th clash at Humber North.
The Kangaroos coaching staff decided this week to give the 3 Australian and 3 Canadian stars in the team a week off so that others may take the opportunity to stand up and be the show pieces for this week.
The rampaging Ottawa Swans had come off their first win in their OAFL history last week against the Guelph Gargoyles and were looking for the prize scalp of the regeining Premiers. If that was to happen this would be the week with a rokkie laden squad the Roos took the field to keep its unbeaten run alive.
A reorganised forward line that on paper just didn't have the same punch as it had in previous weeks. With Mike Langner not playing, the forward would surely miss his outstanding courage, elusiveness and creativeity to produce a winning score line. With the huge crowd chanting the words to the now hit and cult song "There's only one Mikey Langner" ringing in players ears the ball was bounced.
The tap was won by the roos who quickly moved the ball forward where Will McQueeney goaled and we were on our way. The 2nd goal of the term was kicked by Justin Rigney with his long raking left foot from outside the 50 meter arch. This highlighted a slow moving 20 minutes.
The Roos lead by 12 points at the first break and showed nothing of the what is needed to stay undefeated. A big 2nd quarter was needed and thats what the fans got. Strong and dominate midfield performance from Captain Adam Paterson, Slammin Sam Bates and lucious Luke Lombardini provide the forwards with a gluten of opportunities to score and score they did. Goals to Will McQueeney, Justin Rigney x 2, Adam Paterson and Luke Lombardini x 2 who slipped into the forward 50 enabled the Royal Blue and White to lead by 49 points at the long break.
An eight goal lead at the long break would make any coaching staff happy, except for stand in coach Justin Rigney who was looking to try and stamp himself as a coaching contender at the club in 2010. Rigney was heard to say to his troops "Keep this up boys and the top job is mine 2010 and i'll make you all look better then, like you do now". The first cagey move by the sneaky Rigney was to have Jeff Vance go down with a calf injury so that he could insert returning forward Colin Bigley into the forward line. Bigley had only made 10 steps onto the field when he marked and passed to a team mate for the quickest impact in OAFL history. This was followed by a quick releasing handball and Bigley had more touches in 30 seconds then some players get in a game. With this impact behind us the boys only kicked 2 goals for term, 1 by Colin Bigley the other by Justin Rigney to lead by 64 points with 20 minutes to play.
Heading into the 3rd term Coach Rigney had been eyeing a 100 point win, but needing a minimum of 6 goals in the last 20 minutes might be too bigger a hurdle to jump for this roookie laden squad. Nonetheless Rigney implored his trooops to make him look good for next years role and asked for 8 goals hoping to settle for 6. Back and forth, peppering the goals Roos tried to get the 6 goals needed but a Swans backline sensing what the roos were trying to achieve held firm. Goals to Justin Rigney, Colin Bigley and Murray Lovett (who is fances himself to take the title away from Mike "Mr Forward Fantastic" Langer as the dominate Canadian in structure chock full of Australian class when at full strength). The roos comfortablely by 78 points.
Next week is the game of the year #1 Etobicoke vs #2 Tor. Eagles.
