SENIORS
It started raining mid week and continued right through the game yesterday at Recreation Reserve in Mernda. The mud was very thick so first use of the ball early was very important and the Hills took advantage. The first goal came from a mark and long shot to Joffa Byron and the second a big bomb from Jayson Darcy-Molloy which slid through the goals after hitting the mud outside the goalsquare. Although Mernda clawed one back by the end of the first quarter it was a very handy start for the Redbacks. They continued to work tirelessly throughout the second and thrid quarters to snag a few more goals and deny the home side a major to hold a five goal lead at the final change. The last quarter was always going to be a slog with tired legs and lots of ball ups. After a strong mark early Joffa Byron was gifted the goal thanks to a 50 metre penalty and although Mernda got two late goals to finish off the game they were well beaten by a more determined side on the day. Tristan Kreymborg was terrific in the ruck and around the ground and was well supported by Anthony Bryce and Ben Strongman at his feet and in the packs. Kane Gilmore played the tagging role asked of him and Dean Haydock and Jayson Darcy-Molloy hit the ball hard across half back to the lead the dominant Redbacks backline. The win places the Hills nicely at the top of the ladder as they start to get more players back to build towards their finals campaign.
RESERVES
The Reserves side has been thrown around week after week this season and yesterday was no exception with two key players taken up to the seniors due to Benn Parker and Abe Williams pulling out before the game. The Redback Reserves slogged it out but just couldn't get the ball forward enough against a very strong opposition. Small borrowing players Grenville Wise, Matt Layt and Brett Aldred performed well in the conditions as did backmen Andrew Boyle and Andrew Schadendorff. Nat Duffell also impressed once again and will be handy for the Hills late in the season.
