SENIORS
The rain during the week left the ground in perfect condition for a great day of football at Cracknell Reserve for the Redbacks first home game of the season. The Hills started well, dominating the play and kicking the first gaol of the match but struggled to convert from many opportunities. Meanwhile, St. Mary's made the most of their chances and held a two goal quarter time lead. Redbacks caoch Dean Haydock remained calm and suggested that the Hills would work their way on top with some physcial presence around the contests. The hard work paid off as Joffa Byron began to dominate up forward supported by Zak Williams whilst Brendan O'Connor was double teamed out of the game at half forward. The Hills remained in front for the second half of the game but whenever they looked like pulling away St Mary's hit back preventing the Redbacks from breaking away. In the end, Panton Hill was happy with their 13 point win. The backline for the home side was put under pressure but Jayson Darcy-Molloy repelled the Burra along with Will Box and Dean Haydock. Brett Thorn played a great game through the middle of the ground with Rob Guest continuing to step up across half forward. Zak Williams provided a focal point up forward and brought the ball to ground when needed and opened the way for Joffa Byron to take the alternative marks. Joffa ended with a huge 9 goals in a clear best on ground performance. Next week the Redbacks head to Watsonia for an away clash on the large A.K. Lines Reserve.
RESERVES
On Saturday the reserves side unfurled their 2011 premiership flag and with this in mind the team was able to start the clash with St Mary’s in attacking fashion. At half time the Panton Hill lead was 26 points. They looked the goods, were winning the contested ball all over the ground and moving the ball quickly to the marking forwards. In the second half it was a different story when the Redbacks stopped running and were second to the ball throughout the third quarter which lead to St Mary’s being able to hit the lead by three quarter time. The Panton Hill players were instructed to regain their first half dominance, but the pressure St Mary’s enforced produced some undisciplined play and easy goals were conceded resulting in another loss for the Redback Reserves. Better players were Alex Bartsch, Jamie Lyncoln, Andrew Sherwood and Andrew Schadendorff. A better four quarter performance is required against Watsonia next week.
