The JRT Swans are well into preseason training with impressive numbers on the track, despite the warm conditions. With the core of the squad maintaining their fitness base over the off season, the Swans are primed to create history this season with three A grade premierships in a row. With up to 5 new recruits with senior credentials, joining the Club, and an influx of young guns from the Swans champion under 17 side, competition for a spot in both senior sides will be fierce. As well as welcoming some new blood into the playing ranks, Head Coach Mark Wallin has also bolstered his impressive coaching panel with the appointment of Defensive Coach David O’Keefe. The former Geelong and Brisbane Bears VFL/AFL player joins another former VFL/AFL player Craig O’Brian (midfield) and local champion, Rod Chapman (forward) which gives Coach Wallin a wealth of football knowledge at his disposal. Despite the Yeppoon side being hot favorites in the 2017 CAFL Premiership, the Coaching panel continue to challenge the squad with grueling fitness sessions and combative tackle and ball skill training.
The Champion Swans will travel to Mackay’s Harrup Park 26th Feb, to take on Premiers, Mackay City Hawks in a preseason match prior to the NAB challenge match between the Gold Coast Suns and the Essendon Bombers. While only a pre-season hit out, the Swans will be very keen to put on a great display and gain bragging rights over their northern opposition. With such a great opportunity to promote the Club as well as represent the Capricornia region, coach Wallin will take the strongest possible side and players will need to impress at training to gain selection for the game.
The Swans will then welcome Bakers Creek Tigers to Swan Park on the 4th March for another preseason match, with hopefully another Rockhampton side joining the action. This day will also be the Clubs official sign on day, with all interested players encouraged to attend training on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6pm with junior training commencing on March 7th from 4.30pm.
