Round Eighteen– Challenge Season

League WOMEN – Uni Rebels v Lightning

League leading Uni Rebels secured the minor premiership with a emphatic 60-47 win against rivals Lightning as the DBA Challenge Season got back underway after the brief interlude for the Arafura Games. Michelle Friel knocked down 21 points for the Rebels as they stormed home in the second half after holding just a two point lead, 27-25, at the half time break. Friel (11.7ppg) had plenty of support from Justine Schmidt (13 @ 8ppg) and Sarah Hagen (12 @ 3ppg), but the trio was made to work as the undermanned Lightning side put up some stiff competition. Sarah Carbone (photo at left) hit a career high 14 to lead Lightning with Courtney Althouse (13) and Deearne Lee (12) backing her up with some scrappy play. Both sides were missing their leading scorers for the game, Jaylene Bonson from the Rebels and Claire O’Bryan from Lightning.

League Women – Eagles v Ansett

The Eagles topped Ansett in overtime 55-53 in a must win for them, especially with playoffs looming in a few weeks. The win was a bit of revenge for the Eagles as they were upset the last time the two teams met. This time however they managed to storm back in the second half after trailing 19-28 at the major break, much like last time. But the Eagles got on the right track with Greta Hollis-Stephensen scoring a game and season high 21, 13 in the all important second half. Leonie Snowdon added 13 to keep her average close to double figures for the season. In the overtime Barbara Teakle hit a crunch basket to give the birds the lead and Megan Fitzpatrick added a free throw to seal the win. Lauren Flanegan led Ansett with 12 and Eloise Drescher chipped in with 10.

Ladder:       Uni Rebels 11-3-0, Tracy Village Jets 8-1-5 & Lightning 7-3-5, Eagles 4-1-9 & Ansett 1-2-12

Next Week:      Eagles v Uni Rebels 6:15pm, Tracy Village Jets v Ansett 7:45pm, Lightning-Bye

League MEN –Tracy Village Jets v Warriors

The Tracy Village Jets just keep coming up trumps in some very close games this season. Tuesday was no different as they snuck by the Warriors 84-79 with four players in double figures (read ‘team effort’). The Warriors did cause a bit of a stir in the second half, outscoring the Jets 46-40 as newcomer Jared Polain (20) and Jay Johnson (17 @ 18.9ppg) teamed up to take it to the Jets in an effort to get over the line with a win. It didn’t happen of course as Nick Pattrick (19 @ 18.2ppg), Travis Ellis (18 @ 22.3ppg), Liam MacLachlan (17) and captain Michael MacLean (16) brought it home for the Bombers with some steady play and their experience showing. That’s 15 in a row now for the minor premier Jets who will go into the playoffs as overwhelming favorite’s.

League Men – Razzle v Uni Rebels

Andre’ Moss (25ppg) hit a season and League high 45 points to lead the Uni Rebels to a 112-51 romp over the Razzle. Moss put together halves of 24 & 21 in a balanced shooting display for the Rebels, knocking down four treys in his haul. He wasn’t the only scorer though as Aaron Richie (18ppg) hit 28 and Jarrod Sheppard 24. Ross Vasic had 14 @ 16ppg and James Panton added 12 for the green and gold. The scoring output by the Rebels in recent weeks by their newcomers, Moss & Richie, will surely test the Jets when next the teams meet. The win by the Rebels also landed them in a tie for 3rd place on the ladder with the Eagles.

League Men – Ansett v Lightning

Ansett took off from the tarmac in the first half to power past Lightning for a 35-16 halftime score, eventually running out winners 80-49. The win keeps them one game ahead of a couple of teams fighting for the double chance spot. Matt Hunt (14.4ppg) from the Blues hit a season high 29 points with from his brother Tom (13) and Cameron McKenzie (15) adding to the end score. Chris Charman led Lightning for the first time this season with a game high 12.
