Games from Round 18 (Women)

League Women Round 18 – Razzle v Tracy Village Jets

The Razzle Storm ran into a ‘storm’ in the form of the Tracy Village Jets who ripped through their defense for a comfortable 89-46 victory. The very able and experienced Sam Rioli tore through the Storm for a game high 27 points with support from Kylie Duggan 20, Tikesa Docherty-Cole 15 and Erin Geer 14. A quick start 19-8 first quarter followed by a huge 24-7 run in the second quarter for a 43-15 half time lead left no doubt about the outcome. Rebecca Murray (17) and Genelle Bridge (13) gave it a good shot, but the Razzle were just not capable of keeping up with the free-flowing Jets. The win tied the Jets with their record run of 32 straight wins without defeat from last year.

Palmerston Power v Eagles

The Palmerston Power completed a clean sweep of the Eagles for this season with a 69-53 win. The four losses do not bode well for the Birds as they will have to overcome the Power if they are to challenge for this year’s Grand Final in 5 weeks. With just two rounds to play before the playoffs begin the ladder is pretty much set with the Power in third place and the Birds in fourth. The Power ripped off 22 points to 16 in the first quarter then left the Birds languishing behind by 13 after a 16-9 run put them up 38-25 at the main break. The Eagles got a few back in the third quarter, but were outscored 18-9 in the fourth. The Powers Brittany Ward broke the +20 point barrier for the first time since the beginning of the season as she nailed 21 to lead all scorers. Tulaha Jeffrey added 14. Samantha Sanders led the Eagles with 16, Michelle Friel 11 and Molly Althouse 10.

Ansett v Lightning

The Lightning cracked the tonne barrier for the first time this season (first time in a long time). The final score against Ansett was 107-67 and secured the ‘double chance’ for the Lightning as they tune up for a major semi-final clash with the league leading Jets in a couple of weeks. Lightning was ahead by just five at half time 44-39, but after the break they outscored the Blues 63-28 in an explosive display not normally seen by the Lightning. Hayley Hendricksen & Dominique Carbone both hit season highs with Hendricksen finishing with 32 and Carbone 26. Three others also hit double figures during the rout. Ansett’s 67 points was their third highest output this season, but was way below what was needed to stay in touch with the hot handed Lightning. Tamiyah Perkins hit a season high 24 and Erin Boyd put up 21, but no others made double figures. Lightning will need this sort of firepower soon if they are to challenge the Jets.

Ladder:                   Tracy Village Jets 16-0, Lightning 11-4, Palmerston Power 8-8, Eagles 6-10, Razzle 4-11, & Ansett 3-13

Next week Round 16:                                Thursday: Razzle v Ansett 6:30pm. Friday: Eagles v Lightning 6:30pm & Tracy Village Jets v Palmerston Power 8:00pm
