Rockets Women Win 2 On The Road

The North Adelaide Rockets Women made it 2 straight wins away from home on Saturday night when they defeated the South Adelaide Panthers at Marion. The Rockets knew they would be in for a tough battle, having lost to the Panthers on their most recent meeting. Again with star Captain Jo Hill, the Rockets had to rally together to get a massive team win.

The Rockets got off to a reasonable start as Jamie-Lee Peris won the tap and Lauren Badenoch opened up the scoring for the night with a nice 3 pointer. The women made quite a few avoidable mistakes in the first quarter, causing a number of turnovers from bad passes and poor ball movement in offence. The Rockets starting 5 were small in comparison to the Panthers, so were solidly focused on boxing out and winning the rebounds. The Rockets and the Panthers went point for point in the first quarter, with South heading into the first break with a 1 point lead, 17-16.

The Rockets came out hard in the second quarter, wanting to take the lead. Some strong work inside and hard drives to the basket saw the Rockets get the Panthers in foul trouble early, however the Rockets were again not rewarding themselves as they only shot 50% from the foul line (12/24). The Rockets outscored the Panthers 17-20 in the second and went into the half time break with a 2 point lead.

Both sides traded baskets for most of the third quarter with neither team able to cement a solid lead. South Adelaide switched their defence to a zone and the Rockets really struggled to execute their offence. It wasn’t until the final term that the Rockets began to build a solid lead. Mid way through the final quarter the Rockets extended the margin out to 14, but the Panthers refused to go down without a fight. The Rockets outscored the Panthers 19-9 in the final quarter before finally finishing off the game with an 11 point victory.

Top contributors were Opal Mader with 19 points and 10 rebounds, Jamie-Lee Peris with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Shannon McKay with 15 points and Lauren Badenoch with 12 points.

The Rockets have a massive double header this weekend.
