Vale Ray Fitzpatrick

The Darling Downs Football community is mourning the loss of USQ great Ray 'Razor' Fitzpatrick. AFLDD Executive member Scott Sowerby has penned the following tribute to Ray;

Ray “Razor” Fitzpatrick began playing with the Institute Eagles in 1984 amidst tough times for the club.

By 1997 Razor had finished up with 157 games for the Institute/University Eagles, a stint as President of the club in 1989 - a premiership season and had bestowed upon him the honour of Life Member of the club. Ray was not a star player but gave his all and was rewarded with a few Reserve Grade premierships toward the tail end of his footballing life. In the 1980s he was also heavily involved in the social side of the club.

After football Razor spent many years as a Table Tennis coach of youngsters and A grade player at the Toowoomba Table Tennis Association where he still competed at the highest level right up to his passing.

With his seemingly eternal happy demeanour and infectious laughter Razor was renowned for things such as his trusty PA system and DJ set up which graced many a function over a period of around two decades. He was also the chief of proceedings when speeches had to be made, either after a grand final or reminiscing at a football reunion.

Sadly it is Ray we will now reminisce about after his unexpected departure on February 14th, aged 57. He will be sorely missed around the traps as people such as him don’t come along very often.
