Bayswater open gap with routine win

Report by Matthew Corvi

Bayswater City cemented their spot at the top of the NPL WA ladder with a confident 4-0 victory over Joondalup United under the lights at Percy Doyle Reserve on Friday night.

Chris Coyne's men moved six points clear of second-placed Cockburn City and seven ahead of Perth Glory, who both play away from home in Round 15 on Saturday afternoon.

With 29 points separating the two sides from only 14 matches, Friday's game played out exactly as expected with Bayswater dominating a Joondalup side whose predicament at the foot of the table looks bleaker by each passing week.

City coach Coyne, whose side scored four goals for the fourth time in five weeks, said: “I’m happy with the performance, it was always going to be a tough task.

“Joondalup have been really unfortunate this year. The table doesn’t lie but they have been unfortunate.”

Bayswater took the lead in only the sixth minute after Joondalup failed to deal with a ball into the box, giving Luka Ninkovic a simple finish.

Just before half-time Joondalup again conceded a sloppy goal as Gian Albano pounced on a poor pass across the box to give Bayswater their second.

Things got worse for Joondalup in the 60th minute. A handball in the box was seen by referee Josh Mannella, who awarded Bayswater a penalty which Paul Lloyd put away to make it 3-0.

Bayswater continued to pile on the pressure and they completed the scoring in the 68th minute when Luke Salmon produced a neat finish from a wide position.

Joondalup goalkeeper James Bosdet at least ensured the scoreline did not get any uglier for his side and United coach Nick Jennings was realistic at the end.

“There was lots of pleasing aspects but once again it was basic errors and the best team in the State punished us,” Jennings said.

“We’ve had opportunities that we should have taken, the disappointment is we haven’t scored when creating clear chances.”
