Balcatta compound Army home woes

Report by Daryn McCleave

Balcatta ended a run of three successive defeats to finish the season in style with a 4-1 rout at Armadale in the PS4 National Premier Leagues WA's final round.

But this defeat for Armadale condemned them to the wooden spoon and continued their wretched home form, losing all 11 league games at Alfred Skeet Reserve in 2015.

The hosts have to go back to Round 2 in 2014 to read of their previous home success, which was a 2-1 win over ten man Subiaco.

And despite a promising opening to this game, once they fell behind in the 34th minute Armadale never looked likely to reward their long-suffering home support with a points return.

Experienced coach Paul Price has guided Armadale to some good results on the road and hauled them within touching distance of the clubs immediately above them, despite an injury ravaged squad.

"We've had to change everything around again. Mitch Castrilli has been out for five weeks with a hamstring injury so wasn't match-fit, but we couldn't defend today," he said.

"That's the worst we've defended since I've been here. We gave away two stupid goals, got ourselves back in it and gave another silly goal away within minutes.”

Looking ahead to next season, Price added that he and his coaching staff were currently in discussions with the club committee about remaining in charge.

Balcatta went in at the break two goals to the good. The first strike from Blamo Qua Qua, who cut in from the right wing, before prodding past Luke Radonich.

Zelfy Nazary headed home the second in the 39th minute, meeting James Sammut's flighted free kick unopposed at the back post.

That was after Army had exerted early pressure without reward, a Jackson Bealey free-kick was palmed away at full stretch by Clint Davies and Darren Francis charged down a defensive clearance which flew just wide.

Army did halve the deficit as they came out after the break looking for a response, as Jesse Fuller glanced home a long throw on 53 minutes.

But any chance of ending their disastrous home form was scuppered four minutes later, Steve Sokol poked home unmarked at the far post from a right wing cross.

Gustavo Catarcione applied the finishing touch from 10m in the 65th minute after Sokol had drawn Radonich out of position as Balcatta enjoyed a comfortable last 20 minutes.

Balcatta assistant coach Steve Zagami said they were delighted to secure sixth place on the table following a season of turmoil on the pitch.

"It took us a while to settle down today but we got the first goal and never looked like we were going to be out of the game, even when they pulled it back the response was excellent,” he said.

"Being two minutes from a Grand Final last year, we would have hoped for a top four finish, but players have gone and a lot of young lads have come in this year and we have to be pleased with sixth.”
