QBE Night Series kicks off with a bang

Football West News

Mandurah City advanced to the QBE Night Series quarter-finals with a thrilling 4-3 win over former Division One rivals Joondalup United at Percy Doyle Reserve on the weekend.

Some 22 goals were scored in six opening-round fixtures as ECU Joondalup, Bayswater City, Floreat Athena, Armadale, Sorrento and Mandurah joined Stirling Lions and Inglewood United, who had first-round byes, in the second phase of the knockout tournament.

Mandurah had taken the lead after just 11 minutes through a Ryan Francis goal but Joondalup equalised five minutes later through Arran Maplestone.

The game opened up in the second half with goals to Lance Louvie in the 53rd minute and Oriol Fernandez in the 60th giving Mandurah a 3-1 cushion.

But Mapleston’s second goal of the night with 13 minutes to play gave newly promoted Joondalup hope against their rivals from the State League last season.

Fernandez scored his second of the match with five minutes left before Mike Kenny responded just two minutes later to set-up a frantic finale but Joondalup were unable to complete the fightback.

In other games, ECU Joondalup disposed of Cockburn City 4-0 and Bayswater City knocked out last season’s league champions Perth SC, 3-0.

Floreat Athena advanced with a 3-2 win over Balcatta, while Sorrento edged Perth Glory 1-0 and Armadale scored a 2-0 win over Subiaco.

The quarter-final draw was conducted earlier today.
