Luke McLaughlan to lead WBA Competitions

The Wanneroo Basketball Association is pleased to announce the appointment of Luke McLaughlan to Competitions & Programs Manager.

Luke will replace Stephen De Wet in the Competition & Programs Manager position after Stephen was recently promoted to General Manager. Luke has spent the last two years as the WBA Competition and Referee Coordinator and has helped guide our competition through unprecedented growth. Like Stephen, his knowledge of the association and its key stakeholders made him the perfect candidate for promotion within our organisation.

Luke joined the WBA in 2021, prior to that he had worked with BWA as the Referee Coordinator for the Senior Domestic League known as the PMBL as well as running WA Basketball Officials.  Luke is also an NBL1 Referee and as officiated at Australian Junior Championships.

At the WBA Luke has overseen the difficult task of managing all our competition needs including the weekly rostering of officials for hundreds of games across multiple venues. 

WBA CEO, Andrew Summerville had this to say about the appointment of Luke.

“I’m really pleased to see Luke move into this position. Since joining us he has shown his value in multiple areas but particularly the referee space. He has worked closely with Stephen to deliver one of the states largest domestic club competitions and has been integral in assisting us manage our growth. He has mentored referees and worked closely with club stakeholders to ensure participation remains our core focus”.

Luke added, “I express my gratitude to Andrew and the Board for providing me with the chance to advance my career in the Wanneroo Basketball Association. With two years of experience working closely with Stephen, I am looking forward to gaining valuable insights and expertise from him as I transition into this new role. I am eager and ready to tackle new challenges and take on additional responsibilities to drive the growth and development of the Wanneroo Basketball Association”.

Luke will stay in the role of Competition & Referee Coordinator until a suitable replacement can be found, thus ensuring no disruption to our competitions. Both Luke and Stephen will conduct a staged handover and training period to ensure we can continue to deliver a high standard of competitions to our members.
