WABL Review – Round 13

This Sunday, 23rd July, the Wolves ended the day with a winning record of 19 wins and 15 losses.

The Under 12 boys ended the day with a 2-2 record. The Champs Team won 73-47 against the Cockburn team. Noah Growden had a big 18-point game. The Wolves boys are now in a three-way tie for the top spot in the ladder. Team 2 continues to roll with another win. This one a 49-41 victory over Cockburn. Team 3 had a close game and fell just short to Rockingham, 48-57. Sid Ramavarman had a 13-point game in the loss. Team 4 had a 10-point loss to the East Perth 2 team. Mason Taylor had 13 points, but the boys still fell short.

The Under 12 Girls had a 2-2 day. The Champs team had a tough day with big loss. Team 2 had a great win, 41-21 versus Willetton. They had 4 players tie for the scoring lead with 8 points. Team 3 also had a great win in a tightly contested 25-22 game. They started out down 12-2 but fought back exceptionally well. Isla Kelly led the Wolves in scoring with 7 points. Team 4 had a tough loss versus the top team on the ladder, but they remain in range to make finals if they win some games over the next couple of weeks.

The Under 14 Boys went 2-2 also. The Champs team lost 51-60 to the Eagles, with defensive rebounding in the final quarter being their ultimate doom. Team 2 also lost a close one with a one possession game versus Lakeside, 55-56. Ashton Thorpe and James Arnatt both had big 16 point efforts in the attempt for victory that fell just short. Team 3 got a blowout win 82-39. They had 5 players in double figures scoring and shared the ball around nicely. Team 4 also had a close game decided by a single possession, but they landed on top, 54-51. Ash Langlands, Alexander Wood, Dylan Thomson, and Marcus Bower all scored in double figures. But Ash Langlands scored the final 7 points for the Wolves, including a critical 3pt shot from the top of the key.

The Under 14 Girls had an impressive 3-1 day. Team 1 had a big 62-27 win over Cockburn. They were in control of the game right from the jump with a 16-4 first quarter that just continued straight through. Team 2 had an impressive 52-36 victory over the Eastern Suns. Izzy O’Donnell had a big 18 point game, and Ruby Coolican and Emily Epple also had 11 and 10 points respectively. Zoe French scored 6, but had very impactful full court defence throughout the game. Team 3 had a down-to-the-wire 38-35 victory with 3 players fouling out, but they were able to just hold on. Eve Kallis led the Wolves scorers with 11 points, but it was a great team game with many contributions. Team 4 lost to Cockburn 22-41 after only scoring 3 points in the first half. They got going in the second half, but it was just too late.

The Under 16 Boys were dominant and went 4-0 on the day. The Champs boys started the day in a 3-way tie for the top spot on the ladder with Warwick and Cockburn. They finished the day atop the ladder after beating Warwick 80-75. They got down early and were behind 26-40 at halftime. But the boys kept fighting and had a 30-15 3rd quarter to turn things around. Taj Gleeson, Loui Pibworth, Sol Herewini-Kapea, and Evan Grinceri all scored 13 points or more in a balanced effort. Team 2 had a huge second half to beat Redbacks 90-78. They went into halftime down 7 and rallied off two great quarters to win big. Angus Bacon and Jack Goosen tied to lead all scorers with 21. Team 3 beat Rockingham 63-47. Owen Baker led the team in scoring with 16, but Oliver Fisher and Makai Clarkson also had double figures. And Team 4 also had a nice comeback win. They were down 27-13 after the first quarter but fought back to an 81-74 victory. The scoring was very balanced.

The Under 16 Girls went 2-2 including a very close, difficult loss from a Champs team in a game that was very competitive throughout. The score ended up 56-59. Aisha Allen was a standout scorer with 15 points, but Zoe Liesis was also terrific with 10 points. Team 2 had a loss to Redbacks 57-66 and Team 3 beat Redbacks 82-36. Lucy Corden led all scorers with 17. Team 4 also had a good win versus the Eagles, winning 58-49. They went into the 4th quarter only up 1, but in the final quarter, they won 10-2 to secure the win. Andi Morris and Maddison O’Sullivan led the team in scoring with 19 and 16, respectively.

The Under 18 Boys had a 2-2 record. The Champs boys dropped to the Willetton Tigers 76-91. They are now 7th place and have a bit of work to do in the next couple weeks to lock in a finals spot. Team 2 was close with the Redbacks Champs team through halftime, but a bad 3rd quarter let them down. Team 3 went the other way – they had a relatively close game through halftime, but then blew out the Redbacks in the second half ending up with a winning score of 87-54. Scoring was balanced with Kayne Ferguson leading the way with 17, but Presley D’Souza, Matt Paine, and Jake Feist all with double figures as well. After two weeks in a row of tough, close losses, Team 4 got over the line with a big, 73-54 win over Warwick.

The Under 18 Girls group went 2-2 on the day also. The Champs team pressured the ball extremely well on the way to a big 98-48 win over Willetton. The team’s hot shooting, making 15 threes, probably didn’t hurt their cause either. Team 2 had a great defensive game, but had a rough time on the offensive end, losing 42-47 to the Tigers. Team 3 had a very solid performance to beat Perry Lakes 59-52. Ava Tomazin had 14 and Saarah Hadji had 12 in a game that was tightly contested all game, with neither team generating much separation. Team 4 lost to the Hawks.

The Under 20 Men went 0-2. The Champs team lost 79-91 to the East Perth Eagles. After a solid start, they lost the second quarter 27-14 and couldn’t get their momentum back after that. Team 2 went into the day tied on the ladder with their opponent, the Redbacks, but fell short 66-84.

Good job to all our players and coaches who competed this weekend. Go Wolves!
