WBA Welcomes New General Manager

The Wanneroo Basketball Association is pleased to announce the appointment of Stephen de Wet to the position of General Manager.

Stephen is no stranger to the WBA having served as the Competition & Programs Manager for the last two years. After a national search it was evident throughout the interview process that Stephen’s knowledge of the association and its key stakeholders made him the perfect candidate to step up into a leadership position within the organisation.

Prior to joining the WBA in 2021, Stephen had previously spent 5 years at Basketball WA where he held various roles including Competitions Officer before moving to Football West in 2020. Stephen was involved in the running of all Basketball WA competitions including WABL, State and Country Championships, SBL and the Senior Domestic League known as the PMBL. At Football West as Competition and Operations Officer, Stephen delivered both senior and junior competitions and the National Premier League. Stephen also holds a Diploma in Sports Management.

At the WBA Stephen has led our competition through unprecedented growth with record numbers of games played each week. He has overseen the enormous task of managing all our court bookings, external venues and database migration from Sports TG to Play HQ.

WBA CEO, Andrew Summerville had this to say about the appointment of Stephen:

“In the last two years Stephen has proven himself to be a leader in our basketball community so when the General Manager position became vacant in late 2022 we knew a potential candidate was right in front of us. In 2023 we underwent a National search and Stephen proved to be the best candidate. He fits exactly what we need as he already has great relationships with our key stakeholders both internal and external as well as our staff and members. He has in-depth knowledge of our systems, processes and business operations. The appointment of Stephen will mean a smooth transition for all parties and enable us to deliver outcomes with minimal disruption.”

Newly appointed General Manager, Stephen de Wet had this to say:

I am grateful to Andrew and the board for the opportunity to further my career with the Wanneroo Basketball Association. I look forward to the new and exciting challenges that lie ahead of me as I begin this new chapter. I can’t wait to continue to build on the relationships I have formed with our clubs and members.” said Stephen.

Stephen will stay in the role of Competition & Programs Manager until a suitable replacement can be found, thus ensuring no disruption to our competitions. He will also train and provide a detailed handover for the successful Competition & Programs Manager.
