2023 WABL Recap - Round 6
Wolfpack WABL teams continued their 2023 campaign with a 19-17 record in Round 6.
Wolfpack D-League Women were impressive in a 20-pt victory over the Eagles of East Perth. The tandem of Olivia Basso and Laniesha Paddon split 32 points evenly. Ananya Tushir and Grace Tavelli tallied 13 and 10 respectively. The team scored 13 triples including 4 from Basso and 3 from Tushir. The D-League Men matched the 20-pt victory of the Women’s side. Ned Oneran made his return from injury and took a critical charge to help spearhead a 2nd half that saw the Wolfpack outscore the Cougars by 15. Ben Geel and Gabe Chadinha had 25 and 22 points respectively. Tariq Muturi was a difference-maker with his timely makes on his way to 19 points.
The U20 Men managed a pair of close wins on the weekend. The Champs Men used balanced scoring with Jack Kingswood (17), Jordan Baker (16), Corey Murrowood and Joseph Plummer with 15 each to defeat the Southwest Slammers. The U20-2 Men managed a 4-point victory over the Senators behind 16 points from Jaemon Yam, 13 each for Frederick Maddison and Ewan Butler, and 10 for Harrison McGuinness.
The U18 Women took a few tough losses on the weekend. The U18-2 Women lost 58-60 in a well contested game against Willetton. The game has many ebbs and flows and came down to the last minute. Jay Gates with 17 and Jorja Montgomerie had 15 points for a team that shared the ball well and played strong defense as a unit. The U18 Green side suffered a similar close defeat 59-63 despite 19 points from Ava Tomazin and 14 for Jorja Herman.
The U18 Men competed hard but came up short in this weekend’s games. The U18 Green Men turned in a solid performance. Jumping out to a 14-point lead at quarter time and winning the 2nd half by 15. Lucas Kingswood led all scorers with 19. He had company in double figures in Thomas Green (12), James Dalton (11), Kayne Ferguson (11), and Tyler Jarvis (10.)
An impressive 3-1 record belongs to our U16 Girls this weekend. Starting with our Champs Girls would secured a 6-point triumph over Slammers. Each player scored and Holly Kemp, Sara Davis, and Jannali Nelson each had 12 points in the victory. The U16-2 Girls were tied at halftime before building an 11-point lead going to the 4th. They kept the positive momentum going by outscoring the Eagles by 14 in the final frame. Rose Wheeler and Luca Kuhn led all scorers with 17 and 15 respectively.
The U16 Boys split the weekend 2-2. The U16-2 Boys well 95-100 in a game filled with plenty of offense. Lennon Mahowa contributed 20 big points and Angus Bacon with 18 as the Wolves fell short versus the Flames. The 16-3 Bous took a 3-pt lead into the 3th quarter on their way to a 92-66 victory over Hills. Makai Clarkson led all scorers with 18. The U16-4 Boys rallied from a tough defeat last week to get back on the winning track against Perry Lakes 2s team. Tristan Lowson led all scorers with 25 including 4 triples. Kai Starr and Hudson Rampling setup their teammates consistently and also manage 18 and 12 points respectively.
The U14 Girls showed well despite the 1-3 record on the weekend. The U14 Champs went down to a talented Perry Lakes squad, even with Shae Grinceri and Grace Tomazin combining for 39 points. The U14-2s lost 28-33 in a game that had 48 fouls and 51 points between the two teams. The U14 Green Girls were able to coast to a 60-26 victory and displayed the quality side that they are. They have been improving week-to-week and its great to see them get a margin victory as a payoff for their hard work.
The U14-3 Boys were a bright spot for the group amassing a 75-43 victory over Hills. Mitchell Zulberti and Ashton Naylor each poured in 16 big points in the victory. You would expect the age group to have a big weekend performance on 4th June.
The U12 Girls continued their impressive seasons with a 3-1 record on Sunday. We start with the U12-4 Girls who ended the first quarter with a 14-2 lead and they never looked back. Each player scored. Eva Goodge led all scorers with 10. Luly Stefanski, Miyavi Arigore, and Aeris Edmonds each poured in 8 points. Coaches Ananya Tushir and Lani Purser would be pleased with the balanced scoring and ball movement that they’ve been preaching. The U12 Champs erased a 7-pt 1st quarter deficit by winning each of the last 3 quarters decisively. Claire Furness had huge 20-pt game with Hannah Benich, Imogen Young, and Aya Moustafa scoring 10, 8 and 8 respectively for a Wolves side that had each player enter the scoring column.
The U12 Boys were 4-0 on the weekend, moving to 20-4 on the season. Coach Nic Vlahov would be proud of his Champs team as they won each quarter on their way to a 21-pt victory over Perry Lakes. Daniel Norberger and Hayden Montgomerie led the scoring attack with 17 and 11 respectively. The 12-2 Boys were very impressive in their 52-35 win over the Lightning. Joshua Epple (12), Kamron Makawa (11), and Kobi Bunt (10) will get the scoring accolades but this team really pressures and plays defense.
