2023 WABL Recap Round 3

This Sunday, 7th May, was a great showing for the Wolves overall. Our club ended the day with a record of 23 wins and 12 losses. Champs teams had a record of 9-2.

The Under 12 boys had a great day and ended with a 4-0 record. In a tough fought game for the champs team, Hayden Montgomerie stood out with some great finishes inside, but more importantly, great help side defence, repeatedly contesting shots and forcing misses at the rim. Team 3 had a big win versus the Suns, and Heath Grinceri had a big game, scoring 26.

The Under 12 Girls went 2-2. Team 2 had a great game against the Cougars. The game got to a 4 point margin in the fourth quarter after a few Wolves turnovers in a row, but the girls settled down well, and ran their press break well to finish it out. They didn’t have any more turnovers in the last 2 minutes. Nala Priddis hit a big 3, and the team made some free throws. A great job pulling out a win in the end, 39-31.

The Under 14 Boys went 3-1. Teams 3 and 4 both had wins with big margins. Team 4 had an amazing balance of scoring with Ash Langlands, Alexander Wood, Sandile Magaisa, and Dylan Thomson all scoring in double figures. And Marcus Bower with 9. Every player on the team scored as well. The Champs team got themselves down in the 4th quarter, but a late game drive by Aidan Kiely to a drop off pass to Olumiji Onikola for a score, was a crucial play. Followed up by several defensive stops in a row. They came away with a 59-54 win.

The Under 14 Girls went 2-2. The Champs team and team 2 both came away with large margins of victory. Team 2 was a bit short handed due to injury, but played great team basketball. 4 players – Zoe French, Ruby Coolican, Emily Epple, and Izzy O’Donnell all finished in double figures. Team 4 fell in a very close, 4 point loss, but the team and Amelia Albrecht had a great game. One notable play, Amelia drove, stopped, and made a fantastic step-through move to a finish.

The Under 16 Boys went 2-2 with the Champs team and team 4 winning big, and teams 2 and 3 falling short. It was amazing to see the bench energy, overall intensity, and togetherness of team 4 in their win. Team 2 got down early and showed some fight in the middle of the game to attempt a comeback, but couldn’t get over the line.

The Under 16 Girls went 3-1, the Champs team fell short, but Teams 2, 3 and 4 all had victories. Turnovers plagued the Champs team in their loss to Cockburn. Improved team defence and pressure from team 2, alongside balanced team offence and good performances from Rose Wheeler and Luca Kuhn (12 and 11 points respectively), was big in the win.

The Under 18 Boys had a tough day at 1-3, but Team 3 had an amazing win. After going down 48-35 at 3 quarter time, the boys rallied together a 24-9 4th quarter to win 59-57. The team defence and rebounding was fantastic over the final quarter, and it was quite the exciting game, coming down right to the end.

The Under 18 Girls went 2-1, the Champs team and Team 2 had close wins, while Team 4 had a loss, and Team 3 had a bye. Jay Gates and Jorja Montgomerie had big scoring games for Team 2 while the teams bigs got into foul trouble, as the team hung in there for a 64-60 win.

The Under 20 Men went 2-0 and the D-League teams also went 2-0. The Champs Under 20 Men’s game was a game of runs. They got up 16-2 in the first 3 minutes, hitting 4/4 from 3 during that time. Then got down by as much as 10 in the 3rd quarter, but came storming back in the end on the back of fantastic defence which fuelled their fast break.

It was a great Sunday of basketball. Go Wolves!
