The WBA wishes to announce that Basketball Operations Coordinator Charles Nix is moving on from his position. Charles informed the club weeks ago of his decision, but the club and Charles thought it best to hold off on the announcement until after the West Coast Classic season. Charles has recently been successful in gaining employment in the education sector, a role that will allow him to spend more time with his young family and improve his work life balance.Nixy came to the Wolves in 2018 and has made a tremendous impact on the club in his 2 years in green. From Aussie Hoops and domestic to WABL and SBL, everyone knows Nixy and has been impacted by his energy and positive attitude.

Like many of us, COVID has forced us to re-evaluate our lives and focus on what is really important. The role of Basketball Operations Coordinator is a demanding one and means much time is spent working afterhours and on weekends and unfortunately sometimes something has to give.

I would like to thank the Wolves Board, led by Ryan Hunter, for their support during my time in this role at the Wolves. It has been a great experience for me and one that I will carry with me for my life, due to the wonderful people I have had the pleasure to work with and build friendships with over the last two years. Personally, I feel extremely privileged to have had the opportunity to work in the sport I love, it has been a dream of mine and a role that I will forever be grateful for being allowed to grow and learn in. I believe that I am leaving the development program in a better position than when I arrived and I’m very proud of what I have achieved in my time. New CEO Andrew Summerville has been fantastic with his insight and direction since arriving and I firmly and openly believe he will lead the association in a new, exciting and professional direction.

I have been lucky to have the opportunity to leave on my own terms with no negative feelings towards the club or anyone involved. My feelings towards the Wolves have never been stronger and I will continue to help where I can and I’m looking forward to continuing my coaching with our senior women’s program over the coming years.

This decision has solely been made on doing what is best to spend more time with my family, as the role requires a person that is fully available to dive into WABL, Domestic and Development Programs in the hours that the kids are available to play and compete.  As mentioned, I will be here to help in whatever capacity I am able to and required by the club” said Charles Nix.

CEO Andrew Summerville said, “It’s very disappointing for us to lose Nixy but we understand his desire to work a more regular 9-5 type job. Post COVID everyone has taken a step back and have been reminded that family is the number 1 priority and we don’t begrudge Nixy for wanting to spend more time with his.”

“What people sometimes forget is that as basketball coaches we invest a lot of time, energy and effort into our players to help them achieve their dreams and we spend many hours providing the best environment for them. Unfortunately, that means for every hour we invest in our players, that is one less hour we have to invest in our family and ourselves and often that takes a toll. It’s a tough life as a coach. You spend a lot of time worrying about other people’s kids and nowhere near enough time worrying about your own. I hope the parents of the kids we coach remember that.” added Summerville.

Although stepping aside from his full-time role with the club, Nixy will still remain as our SBL women’s coach in 2021.

He will also assist in our programs and with a WABL team but this time as a volunteer parent like many others.

Nixy will finish his full-time duties in the coming weeks.

The search for Charles’s replacement will begin immediately.
