Wolves Claim Battle of Joondalup III

The Chambers Franklyn Joondalup City Wolves have retained the Merv Day Shield for another season after winning the Battle of Joondalup III by +3 points across both the Women's and  Men's games on Saturday evening at HBF Arena.

It was a big occasion for the club, and in front of more than 600 fans, the Wolves got to work early in the Women's game. A close and hard fought contest that would see the Wolves Women lost by another agonisingly small margin, this time 2 points.

The young brigade was again impressive, as was Abbie IRONMONGER who is running the point and marshalling the troops in inspirational skipper Shani AMOS’s absence.

Prior to the Men's game, City of Joondalup Mayor The Hon. Albert JACOB was on hand (along with other guests from the City) to present the Wolves with a Recognition Award for long and successful service in the region.

The Wolves men had their backs to the wall for a large portion of the evening, and with the absence of noted sharp-shooters Brian SULLIVAN and Trian ILIADIS, some offensive avenues were missing. Down 19 points at 3/4 time, the night (and the perpetual shield) looked likely lost to any observer other than the genuinely true believer (we have a few in our ranks).

Enter Reece MAXWELL and Jalen BILLUPS into beast mode status. Both athletes were instrumental and indeed inspirational - under pressure and pegging back a sizable margin, they drew their team-mates along with them and the momentum swung incredibly towards the Wolves and didn't stop.

The Wolves Men delivered a 26 point margin swing in the final quarter, to win by 5 points 97-92.

Skipper Seb SALINAS gratefully accepted the Merv Day Shield from Mayor JACOB, to the rapturous applause of the Wolfpack Army.

The Battle of Joondalup III was won.
