Friday night’s SBL action began at Bendat Basketball Centre with the Lady Hawks putting their undefeated record on the line up against the team that eliminated them in last year’s semi finals.

And it was the Lady Wolfpack who proved their nemesis again taking away the nine-point victory to end Perry Lakes’ winning run at 14 while making it three straight wins themselves following a tough run of form.

The Wolves got off to a terrific start holding the Hawks to just nine first quarter points and also getting Nat Burton in foul trouble. She had four first half fouls with Perry Lakes already without livewire Gabby O’Sullivan.

The Wolfpack still led by 13 points at half-time and by as much 21 points at one stage, but the Hawks were always going to make a run.

They did reel off nine straight points to close to within five down the stretch, but the Wolves continued to have all the answers with Kelli HAYWARD hitting crucial shots from downtown while also getting to the line to seal the eventual nine-point victory.

Shani AMOS delivered 22 points and seven assists for Joondalup on the back of shooting 8-of-11 from the field and 5-of-5 from three-point range.

HAYWARD delivered her best game of the season for the Lady Wolfpack too with 16 points including hitting 3-of-4 from three-point territory.

Klara WISCHER also finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and four assists for Joondalup with Nikita MARTIN adding 10 points.

Wolves coach Craig FRIDAY couldn’t have been happier with the win over a Hawks team that really hadn’t been tested so far in 2017.

“It’s good for the fact that we’ve beaten someone above us on the ladder so we can start to close the gap on that. They have been great all year and they were obviously missing Gabby O’Sullivan and I thought we did a great job on Burton in taking her out of the game early,” Friday said.

“You have games like that where those things work in your favour and those when they don’t, but the girls hung tough. Shani went down late and a few of the girls got a little bit tight, but they did well to come away with a win against a team that has been humming along for a long time.

“We just had to focus. We came out of the timeout and I thought we did a good job defensively, but we didn’t execute what we wanted to at our end of the floor. That’s something we can work on and that’s a positive for us, but we are very happy with this performance.”

Lauren Jeffers top-scored for the Lady Hawks with 15 points, five assists and four rebounds with Sarah Donovan adding 11 points and 10 boards, Kate Anthony 10 points and Nat Burton nine points and five rebounds in just 17 minutes.

Toni Farnworth (nee Edmondson) also had eight points, eight rebounds and six assists for Perry Lakes.
