Physical Preparation

We cannot change the physical attributes like height, leg and arm length that we are born with. We can however improve in some key areas of physical preparation.

Physical Preparation is a great way of building team camaraderie, increasing competition, increasing self-belief and also an understanding that improvements come in small increments, and over time these add up to be big improvements.

Being in the best possible physical shape is paramount to success. A season or a tournament takes its toll on the body, and ensuring that you are as close to 100% tip top shape before you start goes a long way to helping you at the end. You want to be ready to make an all-out assault on a finals campaign or a gold medal game, not limping into the final lap.

Our preseason focuses a lot on preparing our bodies for the rigours and attrition that takes place during the season.

During the season our focus on injury prevention and recovery takes precedence over physical preparation. We have different phases of physical preparation throughout the 20 weeks so we are not continually running players into the ground.

We pay strict attention to the schedule and work loads of the players and have light, medium, heavy and off weeks planned into our practice program. This helps maintain our guys at the highest level possible for competition.

Here are the Physical Preparation Criteria and attributes we look for:

Speed - acceleration from standing still, change of speed while moving.

Agility - lateral, change of direction while moving at speed, ability to operate with a confined area.

Jumping and landing - jump with power, land under control, repeated efforts.

Endurance - ability to run for extended periods.

Strength and conditioning - bench press, bench pull, squats 1 rep max in relation to body weight.

Flexibility - helps minimise soft tissue damage.

Sleep - the number one form of recovery.

Recovery protocols - nutrition, hydration, cryotherapy, compression, massage.

ACA Ratings - Attitude, Accountability, Attendance

Health - Injury Management, Prehab, Rehab, General Health and Well being.

Train hard, recover well and enjoy your Basketball!

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
