Lady Wolves Hungry for Success

The Merriwa Tavern & Bistro Joondalup City Wolves Women's team continue to gain new fans as they move to 9-1 to sit second outright on percentage on the 2016 WSBL Ladder. With club Management opting to take an All-Australian (no import) roster into the season, it was suggested by some pundits that the Lady Wolves would lack the firepower and class to finish games against quality opposition. This clearly hasn't been the case at the half-way mark of the season, in fact, quite the contrary.

Adding Perth Lynx contracted player Klara WISCHER to the roster has been a recruiting masterstroke by Head Coach Craig FRIDAY, whose eye for talent and filling gaps in the roster is well regarded. The WISCHER stats speak for themselves since she made her debut for the Wolves in Game 2, averaging 20.3ppg, 49.4FG% and a commanding 86% from the charity stripe. This form has been rewarded with her first SBL All-Star weekend selection, starting for the North side coached by FRIDAY.

Recent milestone gamer Amy KIDNER is also acknowledged for the Wolves success to-date, where her shooting prowess inside the paint has been a significant advantage and, in an ominous sign for the rest of the competition, her accuracy improves as the season unfolds. Following some time away to travel in the pre-season, KIDNER really clicked a few games in and has dominated her position thereon having played all 10 games and averaging 15ppg at 50.8FG%, with her breakout game being her "100th", where she shot 31pts and savaged the opposition.

The balance between youth and experience that this roster exhibits has been identified as one of the reasons for the hunger within the group. Wise, game-hardened top liners like Shani AMOS, Ellyce IRONMONGER and Nikita MARTIN are being complimented but also pushed by their younger, eager teammates such as Chloe FERGUSON, Briana CHAMBERS and Chelsea BELCHER. This is always a vital ingredient for a winning culture and a successful season.

Just how far can this group can go in season 2016, that remains to be seen. But based on their form, their resolute attitude and their improvement each game, season 2016 could well be a special year for this group of Lady Wolves.
