NEWS: Geelong Region Men’s Div 1 – Round 9 Review

GEELONG Rangers have continued their amazing start to the Geelong Region Men’s Division 1 season after defeating Barwon 2-1 in their Grand Final replay at Myers Reserve on Sunday.

Matthew Long and Darren McCallum came up with the goals which in the end secured the three points for Rangers in a close game. Barwon’s lone goalscorer was not submitted by the club.

The result sees Rangers remain entrenched at the top of the table with 24 points, ahead of Surfside Waves by six points. In addition to that, they have a game in hand over the Waves. Barwon slips to 7th position on the table with 10 points.

The only Friday night game of the round was played at Shell Road Reserve between the second placed Surfside Waves and second last placed Barwon Heads. Surfside came away with the three points comfortably, defeating the visiting side by a mammoth 8-1 scoreline.

Adrian Bond scored four goals, Andrew Stevenson recorded a hat-trick and Mathew Boore netted one, while Barwon Heads’ only goalscorer was not submitted by the club.

Surfside now sits in second position with 18 points, while Barwon Heads remain second last with seven points.

On Sunday afternoon at the White Eagle House, bottom side Breakwater Eagles hosted Drysdale. The visitors were the ones who came away with the points in a very tight contest, as they defeated an impressive Eagles by two goals to nil.

Rhys Clapp and Nick Tsongas both scored one goal apiece for Drysdale which secured the victory for their team.

Drysdale has jumped to fourth spot on the current standings with 13 points, while the ever improving Breakwater still finds itself at the bottom of the pack with just one point from nine rounds.

Corio and Deakin Ducks shared the points in an entertaining clash at Hume Reserve with the final score being 2-2. Petar Bozic and Goran Stojanovski scored two goals for Corio, while the Ducks’ goalscorers were not submitted by the club.

Deakin is third on the table with 16 points, just two points behind second placed Surfside, while Corio is in sixth position on the ladder with 12 points.

In the final game of the round, Surf Coast defeated Lara United 2-0 at Lara Recreation Reserve.
