NEWS: GRFC (WOMEN’S DIVISION) – ROUND 18 REVIEW

KARDINIA International College capped off a stellar season, in which it dominated the GRFC Women’s Division from start to finish, clinching the minor premiership in style by defeating Barwon Heads 5-0 at home last Saturday afternoon.

The Students left it until the final round of the regular season to secure the title, taking all three points against the Hammerheads courtesy of a double by Ella Polglaze and singles to Sofia Harrop, Stephanie Cameron and Charlotte Gittins.

The win was enough to fend off second placed Deakin Ducks, who weren’t able to steal the title from Kardinia despite themselves recording an emphatic 4-1 win over Geelong SC Red.

Deakin’s goalscorers included Hannah Gordon with two and Jacquie Denning and the league’s Golden Boot, Madeleine Lee Gow, with a goal apiece.

Across town at Grovedale Reserve, meanwhile, the visiting Surfside Waves were sluggish out of the blocks as they took their time to settle, which allowed Barwon SC to dictate terms.

The home side was creative from the back with Marincic, Christie and Robertson controlling the play exceptionally well. Surfside's back line was outstanding, though, with Billington and Wallace letting nothing through.

The Waves improved as the game wore on with Mills on fire in the midfield and Fletcher running for everything on the wing. Harrington was the creative flair for Barwon as was Mills for Surfside, with Donkers for Barwon pressing hard at every opportunity.

Murphy had a good impact for Surfside as she was introduced in the second half and Beaukenex applied some good pressure up forward for Surfside but the deadlock could not be broken. The end result of 0-0 was a fair one, in a game where defenders from both sides excelled.

The mutually beneficial draw was enough to secure the third placed Barwon and fourth placed Surfside a spot in the Finals’ series, which starts next weekend.

In other Women’s Division games played last weekend, Geelong SC and Surf Coast FC fought out a 0-0 draw, while a Serena Clapp hat-trick led Breakwater Eagles to a convincing 5-0 thrashing of wooden spooners Corio Bay.
