BNE Oilers Ran Out of Gas

The Saturday nightcap provided one of the most intense and best games of this year’s BECOL season, as defending champs BNE Oilers and the local team, Western Maraton Warriors, battled in a third and deciding game to see who will get a spot in this year’s Senior Finals.  Western Warriors was without the services of their center and team leader, Keith Acosta, while BNE Oilers came out with a full roster, with all intent of reaching the finals for the second year in a row.  However, Western Warriors jumped out to an early lead, finishing the first quarter up 23 – 16, with Stanley “Stainless” Flowers and Emerson King scoring 9 and 8 points respectively.  At the end of the half, Western Maraton Warriors maintained their lead, 32 – 23, where Mark “Diesel” Wagner was keeping BNE Oilers in the game, as he scored 8 points in the first half, while Jason Daly and Chris “C-Rod” Rodriguez chipped in with 7 points each.

In the third quarter, showing great poise and composure, BNE Oilers made their run, outscoring Western Maraton Warriors 20 – 9, taking a 2 point lead going into the fourth quarter, 52 – 50.  The intensity of the game accentuated in the final quarter, as the fans began to yell for their team, while the players on Western Maraton Warriors were showing fatigue and frustration, after letting a 17 point lead slip away.  With the score being even at 56 a piece, with 5 minutes remaining, each possession proved to be pivotal, as the biggest lead in the fourth quarter was a mere 4 points.  Emerson King and Stanley “Stainless” Flowers were the only 2 players that scored for Western Warriors in the fourth quarter, accounting for 12 and 7 points respectively, hitting 7 crucial free throws.  With 28 seconds remaining, Mark “Deisel” Wagner sank a huge free throw, giving BNE a 2 point lead, 67 - 65.   Western Warriors next possession went to their point guard, Stanley “Stainless” Flowers, who drove to the basket and hit a huge lay-up,  knotting the game at 67, with only 8 seconds remaining.  After the shot, BNE ran a 2 – 1 fast break, where they made a key turnover, giving the ball to Emerson King, who scored the winning shot on a fast break, giving Western Warriors a huge 69 – 67 victory.

Stanley “Stainless” Flowers, and this year’s MVP, finished the game with 29 points, while Emerson King chipped in 22 points, to secure 2 consecutive wins, after losing the first game in the best of three series.  For BNE Oilers, they had 4 players in double figures, with Mark “Deisel” Wagner leading the charge with 16 points, while Christian “C-Rod” Rodriguez netted 14 points, and Jason Daly and Dorian “Cheezy” Jones helped out with 13 and 12 points respectively.  With the win, Western Warriors will now square off against the undefeated Hydro E-3, in the BECOL Finals, giving the San Ignacio fans a treat, since for the first time 2 San Ignacio teams will battle in the finals.
