Tasmania's Maddie Smith has been selected as an All Australian for the second time running.
Smith currently plays in the Tasmanian Women's Football League (TASWAFL) with the Clarence Football Team and last year represented the state at the National Women's Carnival from which she was selected in the All Australian Team at only 16 years of age.
Following the carnival, Smith was invited to play in the Victorian Development Squad who recently traveled to Adelaide to compete in the 2012 U18 Youth Girls National Championships. Smith's outstanding performance at the championships gained her selection into the 2012 U18 All Australian Team, making this her second selection into an All-Australian side.
AFL Tasmania Community Football Manager, Brett Mansell, says that Smith's selection demonstrates that there are great opportunities out there for women footballers.
"Maddie is a great example of what opportunities there are for young females wanting to give the game of AFL a go!
"Based on Maddie's success, AFL Tasmania will work with AFL Victoria to develop an Memorandum of Understanding between the two states which will result in more young Tasmanian female footballers being given the opportunity to play at the national level until Tasmania eventually fields our own team."
Within the state, AFL Tasmania will continue to develop its commitment to growing the level of female participation particularly through the TASWAFL competition. This competition currently fields six teams competing in a ten round roster. AFL Tasmania is committed to developing this competition in which Maddie is a star player.
