B Grade and Social Women’s MVP

The Basketball Mount Gambier B Grade and social competitions provide an opportunity for players to enjoy the game of basketball with friends in a fun and competitive environment, while all competitions had to end at finals time there was still enough basketball played to award MVP’s for the B Grade and Social competitions.

The B Grade Blue Competition was dominated by the Murphs who went undefeated for the season with only one blemish coming in the form of a draw against the Beags Red. It was Murphs team leader Ben Swan who was awarded the MVP for the B Grade Blue. Ben who had some monster scoring games including a 34-point performance against the Cobras was really happy with his side and understood the decision to end the season early, ‘Our team (the Murphs) had a cracker year finishing undefeated! Definitely a safe decision to end the season when we did, these are crazy times.’

‘Thank my team, all the boys had a great year and played really well. Thanks to the referees and the Basketball Mount Gambier staff.’

The Men’s B Grade Gold competition was hotly contested with all of the top four teams a possibility to win the whole thing had the season been allowed to continue, it was however the Tigers that would finish the season on top and Tigers Ben Anderson who was awarded the MVP.

Ben simply loves the game of Basketball spent time in his early days playing for the Mount Gambier Pioneers and more recently coaching his daughter Maya in the U14 Mount Gambier association competition, he has thoroughly enjoyed playing with the Tigers this season, ’It’s been good fun competing with some old rivals from past years, and at a much slower pace than back in the day.’

He acknowledged those that support the league, ’I’d like to thank the referee, scorers and most importantly the Tuesday bar staff!’

Teammate Pete Homes had a lot of praise for Ben, ‘He is a great basketballer who controls both ends of the floor, I like to think he is the Michael Jordan of the B Grade but more like the old Wizards version of Jordan’ Pete’s tongue firmly in his cheek.

With this unprecedented time we are going through Ben is thinking ahead to a possible return to playing but has his reservations, ‘It is a weird time, I am not sure how many games of basketball are left in this broken old body. Each week we don’t play brings me closer to my final game!’

The Social women’s competition was also played in great spirits, players having the opportunity to play with friends and enjoy the great game of basketball in a competitive environment. It was the Bullettes who would finish on top of the ladder, led by MVP Toni Sims. Toni having another wonderful season averaging 11 points per game, her biggest scoring game of 20 points coming against the Tropic Thunders.

The ever-modest Toni had a lot of praise for her teammates, ‘I love playing with the girls, we have a lot of fun and it has been great to catch up with them weekly to play.’
