MCDFNL Preview - Round 11
Avoca v Newstead
With a big crowd expected at Avoca for Trevor Field’s 500th game in the early game on Saturday and the 20 year Reunion of the 1993 season, Avoca will be confident of a good showing against a strong Newstead combination.
The Bulldogs have won their past three games and have made inroads into nullifying the reputation of being poor finishers with a fighting win against Campbells Creek after being challenged recently and a fighting win over Talbot last Saturday so they will be looking forward to the challenge of facing a top four contender.
Newstead have bounced back after successive losses to Navarre and Carisbrook with percentage boosting performances against Talbot and Campbells Creek in the last two rounds.
The Steaders are strong down the spine, but are also good through the middle with Nathan Webster and Sam Kerr proving to be a good combination and will need to be challenged if the Bulldogs are to have any chance of continuing their winning form.
Newstead are likely to continue their winning run, but it could be a closer contest than expected.

Trentham v Campbells Creek.
Campbells Creek travel to Trentham in a tenth versus 13th battle on the ladder.
An undermanned Creek are coming off a massive defeat at the hands of Newstead while Trentham also suffered a big defeat when they journeyed to Navarre last Saturday.
With the wheels seemingly falling of Creek who promised so much earlier in the season, it is a big possibility that Trentham can score their second win of the season, particularly as this match is being played at home.
Trentham’s coach Clayton Scoble is working on moulding a strong unit together for the future of Trentham and has a number of promising youngsters at his disposal and this is a game that can help provide some confidence to his young charges.
Creek have been without Sean and Joel Smith who are massive losses to the Magpies and if they are once again unavailable then Trentham’s chances will be given a major boost.

Talbot v Lexton
This is a big game for the Talbot Hawks who’s top eight chances were dealt a severe blow when they were defeated by Avoca last Saturday.
Lexton are currently sitting in fourth place on the ladder and are equal with Navarre and Newstead on points. The Tigers are going about their business with not much fuss and will be confident of continuing their winning form this week.
Matt Brown will need to be well covered by the Talbot defenders, but Lexton have many avenues to goal with Rob Mosby proving to be a goal sneak in recent games as well. Jimmy Templeton has been playing well but is expected to miss with a dodgy ankle, and Damon Aspland has had a consistent season in the middle, and should be too good for the likes of Talbot running players in Brandon McRedmond, Richard Clark or Matthew Smith. Paul Phillips and Mick Jennings are MCDFNL Reps who provide a strong back half for the Tigers, and should have no worries from Talbot’s lack of forward power.
Lexton to win comfortably.

Harcourt v Maryborough Rovers
Harcourt announced themselves as a finals contender last week with a fighting win over Natte Bealiba to keep their unbeaten form at the Natte Yallock in check.
The Lions have gone under the radar a bit this season and currently have a five and five win loss ratio and are sitting in 7th place on the ladder only two places behind second placed Navarre.
While Rovers have regained some of their injured players and are providing more of a contest, they will be hard pressed to stop the Lions from adding another win to the ledger.
Harcourt has one of the best ruckmen in the league in Kris Davis, and after a slow start to the season, Paul Chaplin has continued to improve as each game progresses and is currently in the same form that saw him win last season’s Berry Powel Medal.
The Lions should win easily at home.

Dunolly v Navarre
Navarre will head to Dunolly this weekend with a view to inflict as much damage on the Eagles as possible.
With the Grasshoppers, Newstead and Lexton jostling for second spot, every game becomes integral for all three sides, and the Grasshoppers will view Saturday’s game as a chance to score a big percentage-boosting win over the Eagles, who have just two wins to their name for the year.
And with the Hoppers likely to be minus a few key players for a couple of weeks, they could certainly do with a big win before they take on league leader Carisbrook in round 14.
The Driscoll brothers, Ashley and Josh, seem to have re-discovered some of their best form in recent weeks, while Kris Brennan made an impressive return from injury last round, booting seven goals in what are encouraging signs for Navarre ahead of finals.
The Eagles have also shown plenty of signs of improvement over the past few rounds, but whether it’s enough to even maintain pace with the ruthless Navarre side, who demolished Trentham last week, and will be out to inflict similar pain on the Eagles.

Carisbrook v Maldon
Carisbrook’s unbeaten run shows no signs of stopping as the MCDFNL heads into its 11th round, with the Redbacks set to tackle fifth-placed Maldon this weekend.
With an almost untenable grip on the league’s top spot, the Redbacks look almost set to finish the season without a loss, given they score a win over the Dons and can defeat Navarre again in round 14h While much of the focus has been on the exploits of the Redbacks’ forward line, which seems to have made an almost weekly habit of registering 50-plus shots on goal, however the side also has the most miserly defence in the league, conceding just 386 points against Combine this with Carisbrook’s lethal midfield and it’s hard to see the Redbacks being toppled by Maldon, despite the Dons’ impressive performance so far this season.
Maldon continues to fly under the radar of some, despite sitting in fifth place on the ladder with a more than respectable 7-3 win loss ratio, sitting just behind Navarre, Newstead and Lexton, but it’s still difficult to see the Dons being the ones to derail the Carisbrook juggernaut.
