IN a hard fought battle between two of the league's best teams, the Yarraville Seddon Eagles came from behind to beat Caroline Springs by 21-points, thanks to a huge fourth quarter from Lachlan Longmire on Saturday.
It was perhaps the Eagles most impressive win of the season as they booted five goals to none in the final term to outlast the visiting Lakers after trailing through each of the first three quarters.
The win now gives Yarraville Seddon a two-game cushion on Caroline Springs, who will be ruing a blown opportunity to leapfrog the Eagles in second place in the standings.
Despite their strong play in the fourth quarter; the Eagles struggled out of the gates, getting outplayed out of the centre by the visitors constantly throughout the opening quarter.
Brian Lake was instrumental around the ground early as the visitors kicked four goals in the opening term and took a 20-point lead into the first break.
Led by Macauley Goring, the home side hit back in the second quarter, kicking the first two goals of the term and slicing into the Lakers' lead.
Yarraville Seddon began to impose their will on the visitors as they started winning their fair share of hard ball gets and when Goring goaled late in the quarter, they trailed by just five-points at half-time.
Both teams came out hard at the start of the second-half and traded punches throughout the third quarter.
Caroline Springs' ruckman, Lewis Tudor, extended the visitors' half time lead to 11-points early in the period from a set shot inside the goal square after Caroline Springs' Joshua Crofton gave away two consecutive 50-metre penalties. Crofton was dragged immediately after the incident, but came back strong later.
The home side responded with two straight goals within 30 seconds of each other at the 10-minute mark to take their first lead of the game.
Just at the Eagles looked ready to take control of the match, Caroline Springs rattled off three straight goals of their own, kick started by a sensational running goal from the boundary line by Troy Manolis.
However, the visitors once again finished the quarter poorly after once again conceding a goal late to Goring, who trimmed the lead to nine-points going into the fourth-quarter.
The back and forth contest paved way to a five-goals-to-none fourth quarter domination by the home side.
Forward Lachlan Longmire, who kicked two goals in the first three quarters, started off the fourth on fire, kicking three straight majors to give Yarraville Seddon the lead for good.
The Eagles never looked back and earned their ninth win of the season, improving to 9-1, while Caroline Springs sit in third place at 7-3.
The two teams will meet again in round 19, the last round of the season.
