Red Torch halts Rivals in IP&E NBL

Team Ngaraard Red Torch continued its winning ways this time beating a tough Ngermid Rivals, 118-116 in overtime Friday night of the 2014 IP&E National Basketball League (NBL) at the Palau National gym.

After taking a 21-13 lead in the opening frame, both teams engaged in a shoot out with the Rivals getting the edge in the second quarter as they outscored Red Torch with a 27-13 output to take a 40-34 advantage.

Then it was a seesaw battle in the second half as both teams tied the score at the end of the fourth quarter at 91-all. In the extra period, Ngaraard Red Torch outscored the Rivals with a 23-22 output that gave them the win.

Liff Ederdong tallied 34 points for the Red Torch while teammates Lester Mendoza and Rusky Remoket chipped in 22 and 13, respectively.

On the other hand, Rivals’ Marvic Ngchar tallied his career high as he finished the game with 51 points while Ody Yalap and King Ngiraboi scattered22 and 13 baskets, in that order.

In other games, Surangel King won over Medalaii Meda Boyz, 89-65; Breakers escape with a 74-73 win over Ngaraard Red Torch; Peched Raw bested Matakui, 92-63; and Ngaraard Red Torch beat WCC Hammers, 76-73.

Games will resume tonight with Ngerchemai Ranchers versus Breakers at 7 p.m. while WCC Hammers will face Surangel Kings at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night match will feature Matakui against Medalaii Meda Boyz at 7 p.m. as WCC Hammers will take on Ngermid Rivals at 8:30 p.m.

Thursday night will have Surangel Kings taking on Ngaraard Red Torch at 7 p.m. as WCC Hammers will be pitted against Matakui in the main game at 8:30 p.m.
