Cockburn romp despite Robinson absence

Cockburn City climbed to fourth on the NPL WA table with a 4-0 win over Inglewood United at Perth Plasterboard Centre Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

With the league’s top scorer Daniel Robinson missing through suspension, Inglewood may have fancied their chances in this DT38 Round encounter.

However Hasani Sinclair, Devon Gibson, Hayden Stevens, and Ash Rosindale all stepped up with the goals for the Cockerels who are one of four teams from third down on 21 points.

Sinclair opened the scoring just five minutes into the match when his looping header left Inglewood goalkeeper Alex Dunn rooted to the spot.

The home side struggled going forward and were particularly reliant on Brian Woodall’s hold-up play when trying to create chances.

The wet conditions made it difficult for some to keep their feet, but City’s Daniel Santich seemed unfazed as he kept skilful winger Hamza Hina under wraps early on.

A massive kick from Cockburn stopper Luke Radonich picked out Gibson perfectly, and the attacker left two defenders in his dust before slotting past Dunn to double the visitors' advantage.

A penalty shout for Inglewood late in the half was turned down by referee Tom Glavovic, to the frustration of the home supporters.

Sinclair came out firing in the second term and had a couple of early chances to double his tally for the afternoon.

But it was Stevens who found the net next for Cockburn, towering over David Cyrus and heading home Jesse Lazarro’s corner.

The weather seemed to cause both sides problems in the second term, with plenty of passes skidding out of play and the sides struggling to maintain possession.

Rosindale capitalised on the inclement conditions late in the match, sprinting in behind the United defence and scoring against his former club.

Despite missing eight first team players heading into the match, Scott Miller’s men will no doubt be pleased with such a strong showing as they ran out 4-0 victors.
