Gulls continue strong finish

Report by Navrin Secker

Sorrento extended their unbeaten run to six games with a 3-1 win over Armadale at Percy Doyle Reserve on Saturday afternoon.

Danny Jones, Reece Vittiglia and Alex Morgan were all on target for the Gulls, while Joshua Kuser scored the visitors’ only goal.

Sorrento coach Jamie Harnwell was pleased with his side’s performance.

“I thought we dominated and were well deserving of the win,” he said.

“We know we’ve got potential, we know we’ve got the players and we’re starting to play now as we should’ve been doing all season.”

The match was very open from the first minute, with both teams looking to attack and create chances.

There was an early penalty shout from Sorrento after Jack Salter and Armadale goalkeeper Sam Hutchings collided while chasing a loose ball, but the referee waived play on.

Sorrento continued to attack and Jones opened the scoring with a tap-in shortly after. A great pass from Vittiglia set up Cameron Teece, whose off-target shot was finished by Jones.

Armadale were clearly struggling and Vittiglia doubled the home side’s advantage with a superb free-kick. His shot was low and bounced in front of goalkeeper Sam Hutchings before ending up in the net.

The visitors best chance of the half came from a corner into Billy Quinncroft, who headed goalwards but the Sorrento defence managed to clear the ball off the line.

The second half burst into life with Morgan forcing a good save from Hutchings in the first minute.

But it was Armadale who started the half the better, with Kuser getting the visitors back into the match. A great cross from substitute Ryan Haslett found Kuser at the back post and he chested the ball into the back of the net.

Sorrento were quick to respond with a goal courtesy of Morgan, who calmly finished following a superb pass from Jones on the wing.

Armadale tried to get back into the game and had two chances in quick succession. Chris Jackson’s header in the box cannoned out off the crossbar, while Michael Rizidis’ shot was off target just moments later.

Armadale's sloppy passing in the final third cost them as they struggled to carve out further opportunities and the Gulls ran out 3-1 winners.

Armadale coach John O’Reilly offered a scathing assessment of his side.

“Atrocious performance today. The boys really let themselves down. Everything that I thought had become a part of our game was not there today,” he said.
