Harnwell wants Gulls to build on win

Report by Matthew Corvi

Sorrento coach Jamie Harnwell wants his side to use their 3-0 win over Joondalup United as a springboard to move up the NPL WA table.

Goals from Cameron Teece, Alex Morgan and Alex Salter gave the Gulls the points at Percy Doyle Reserve on Saturday against a game Joondalup side who again lacked a cutting edge.

After four straight league defeats Harnwell was pleased with both the victory and his side's showing.

"It was a difficult game; we approached it professionally and I thought we should have won by more,” Harnwell said.

“Hopefully this gives us a bit of confidence to go on a run and start climbing the table."

Sorrento started the stronger of the two sides and deservedly went into the lead in the 29th minute.

After James Bosdet conceded a sloppy free-kick on the edge of the box, Reece Vittiglia forced a fantastic save from the Joondalup keeper only for Teece to get to the rebound first to put his side ahead with a simple finish.

Joondalup had multiple chances to equalise going into half-time but were not clinical enough.

And not for the first time this season they would suffer the consequences as Sorrento doubled their advantage in the 65th minute. Scott Witschge floated a cross into the box and Morgan put away a simple header for the Gulls' second of the game.

With just a minute left on the clock the home side made it 3-0 through substitute Alex Salter, who broke the United offside trap before finishing past Bosdet.

Joondalup are anchored at the foot of the ladder with a single point from 10 matches, but coach Nick Jennings was still positive with how his players performed.

“I can’t question the boys' desire; for long periods of the game I thought we were the better team,” he said.

“I said to the boys I feel sorry after the effort they put in that they got zero reward."

Sorrento are at home to Bayswater City on Wednesday night, while Joondalup's search for a first win of the season could come at home to Stirling Lions.
