Inglewood remain on top with victory over Cockburn

Report by Tommy Doleman & Inglewood United

Inglewood United have maintained their position at the top of the PS4 NPLWA ladder after a 2-0 win over Cockburn City at Perth Plasterboard Centre Stadium on Saturday.

Brian Woodall scored just before half time before star striker Alex Salmon found the net to secure Inglewood's one-point lead over Bayswater City in the competition with two games remaining.

The home side were rarely troubled throughout the match, but had to wait until first half stoppage time to go ahead when Woodall struck.

Inglewood missed a number of chances in the early stages, as Woodall curled narrowly beyond the top corner, Chok Dau stabbed an effort over the bar and Kenny Keogh flashed low across the face of goal.

Cockburn didn’t return fire until the 27th minute when Calvin Whitney’s strike was pushed away by goalkeeper Alex Dunn.

The home side had to wait until first half stoppage time to go ahead when Woodall struck. Keogh won possession and played in Woodall, who showed great composure to find the net.

Following the break, Julian Teles lifted high after creating space for himself but Salmon’s finish was too close to the keeper.

Salmon made amends just after the hour by blasting into the roof of the net from a few metres after meeting Keogh’s superb cutback, adding his 28th goal of a phenomenal campaign to double the host’s lead.

Cockburn began to threaten at the end of the game, enjoying stronger posession, but their efforts weren't enough to knock Inglewood from the top.
