Inglewood triumph over Armadale in tight clash

Report by Matthew Corvi

Alex Salmon was the key to Inglewood’s 2-0 victory over Armadale in their PS4 NPLWA clash at Perth Plasterboard Centre Stadium on Saturday, scoring both goals in the last minute of each half.

Neither side was able to create many chances in the first half, although Salmon came the closest with his header bouncing off the bar in the 17th minute.

After a slow start to the match, Armadale switched the ball out wide to Jake Sardelic who was able to take on his man and drive a shot at goals, only to be denied by Alex Dunn.

The first half continued to be a drab affair, with both sides struggling to make chances.

With the second half only minutes old, Inglewood got their opening goal of the match. Salmon was fouled in the box after challenging for a header, and referee Matthew Southern had no chance but to point to the penalty spot.

Salmon stepped up to take the penalty, and confidently placed his shot to the opposite side of Michael Craggs.

Despite going behind, Armadale started to take control of the game, and would have been ahead if not for the efforts of Dunn.

After a free kick was conceded on the edge of the box, Dunn managed to get to the ball at full reach, keeping his side in the lead and making one of the saves of the season.

With Armadale committing more bodies forward to chase an equalizer, Inglewood had the chance to shut out the game.

Following a quick counter attack, Salmon found himself free in the box, and the competition’s leading goal scorer did not miss the chance to score his second, placing the ball into the far corner of the goal.

Interim Inglewood coach Andres Oliveira was pleased with his team’s performance, despite the release of former coach Taki Nicolaidis during the week.

“It’s been a difficult week, the boys responded fantastically,” he said.

“We wanted to move on, we prepared well this week and got the result.”

Despite the loss, Armadale coach John O’Reilly was pleased with his side’s performance.

“Defensively the first half we were solid, we had opportunities but we didn’t take them,” he said.

"I’m happy with our defensive performance, but we couldn’t perform in the key areas and got caught offside too often.”
