Perth produce a dramatic late win over Subiaco

Report by Jayden Lihou

Perth SC have beaten Subiaco in round 10 of the of the PS4 NPLWA season with a last-gasp stoppage time winner at Dorrien Gardens on Saturday.

Subiaco equalised before half-time after Perth had opened the scoring but a goal from striker Harley Orr in the 93rd minute ensured his side secured all three points.

The win sees Perth climb to 3rd on the ladder and they now trail first-placed Sorrento by four points.

Perth coach Ramon Falzon said he was always confident that his side would find the winner, especially after how well his team performed in the second period.

“In the first-half we were a bit shaky on the ball and Subiaco exploited our errors,” he said.

“But in the second-half we were the dominant team and created four or five clear chances.

“It doesn’t matter if the goals come early or in the last minute like today, we’ll take the win because three points are three points.”

After a tightly contested start to the first-half, Perth broke the deadlock in the 39th minute.

A cross was whipped into the box and was met by the diving header of Niccolo Sabatini who made it 1-0.

The home-side had a golden chance to double their lead just four minutes later when Frank Furfaro received the ball at the half-way line.

After a darting run to the edge of the box, the winger cut inside and managed to fire a shot towards goal however he was denied only by the crossbar.

Perth began  to rue that missed opportunity as Subiaco levelled the scores a mere minute later.

A long diagonal ball found an open Carlin Feely at the far post and he managed to slot the ball past the onrushing keeper and into the back of the net.

The home-team had a chance to restore their advantage in the 58th minute when a deft through-ball found Orr.

The Subiaco defence had been caught off-guard and the striker found himself one-on-one, however his effort was denied by keeper Ryan Montgomery.

Subiaco had a chance for themselves in the 85th minute when they were awarded a free-kick.

The ball found its way to Rory Feely but his headed attempt on goal strayed just wide of the post.

As the match seemed destined to end in a draw, Andreas Theodosiades played Orr through on goal and this time the forward made no mistake, giving his side a valuable victory.

Subiaco player-coach Ian McMurray said he was disappointed to lose so late in the game.

“I thought we played well enough for a point and I thought maybe we could have even snuck a winner in the end,” he said.

“In the last 10 minutes it was quite an even contest, they had a few chances but we got in behind them a couple of times as well.

“So I’m disappointed to lose the game especially after the performance we put in, but credit to Perth, they kept at it and took their chance when they got it.”
