Bayswater hit their stride with 4-0 win

Bayswater jumped to fifth position on the PS4 NPLWA leagues table after beating Joondalup United 4-0 at Percy Doyle Reserve on Saturday.

David Heagney opened the scoring in the 17th minute, followed by Luka Ninokovic in the 36th before Jack Allen and Bor Bor Sam wrapped up the game for the visitors in the second half.

Bayswater coach Chris Coyne said he saw improved quality and decision making from his side this week, but is looking ahead to the next stage of development this season.

“I think we need to be more clinical, because when you are in tight games and you get into the right areas you have got to take your chances,” he said.

“Today I think, without being disrespectful to the other team, there were about 7 or 8 that we should have scored, and that could be important at the end of the year if it comes down to goal difference.”

The visitors sustained a relentless attack on Joondalup’s goal in the opening quarter, forcing many saves from keeper James Bosdet.

It wasn’t long until they found the scoreboard, with Sam and Heagney combining to tap the ball in at the right post in the 17th minute.

Joondalup responded immediately but captain Josh Whitmore’s shot from by the left post went just wide for a corner.

Ninkovic put the visitors two ahead in the 36th minute, guiding the ball into the net after some great work from Heagney on the left wing.

The pair combined brilliantly again just before the break, but Ninkovic headed Heagney’s pass just over the crossbar.

Coyne said Heagney was on form this week and his dynamic play is what he wants to see every week.

“I want to see him do that every week - the whole reason I signed him is because he excites me,” he said.

“He’s got the ability to go past players, score goals, make goals, and when he works that hard and does what he did today, I think it’s a pleasure to watch and people get their money’s worth when they watch players play like that.”

Joondalup’s best second half chance came in the 51st minute when Anthony Taylor supplied Jay Mardsden for a tap in, but he sent it skywards.

Bayswater proved too strong and in the 76th minute substitute Allen made it 3-0 with another brilliant assist from Heagney.

Bayswater took no prisoners with the lead and seven minutes later Sam dashed in from the right wing to seal the scores at 4-0.

Joondalup coach Nick Jennings was disappointed in his side’s performance but said it was the hardest challenge they’ve had to face this season so far.

“I wanted to start the game at a high tempo, but we never really got going and Bayswater just showed their true quality,” he said.

“We are missing six starters, no excuse on that front, but we didn’t do ourselves justice today which is my main disappointment and they were just too good for us on the day.”
