Double trouble as Sorrento thrash Armadale

Report by Tristan Wheeler

Doubles by Jack Salter and Billy Quinncroft helped Sorrento to a comfortable 5-1 victory over Armadale, in a physical PS4 NPLWA round 4 encounter at Alfred Skeet Reserve on Saturday.

Sorrento coach Jamie Harnwell was ecstatic with his side's performance, calling it “comprehensive”.

Opposing coach John O’Reilly admitted that his team had not executed their game plan and had been caught out in key areas.

Sorrento gained control of the match early with a 12th minute cross from Ryan Pearson finding Scott Witschge, who’s shot was deflected for a corner kick.

Armadale created an opportunity against the run of play in the 17th minute, earning a free kick that resulted in Milan Ognjenovic’s header being saved by James Morgan.

Sorrento’s pressure paid off in the 18th minute. Armadale keeper Michael Craggs could only manage to palm a saved shot into the path of Salter, who promptly scored, giving Sorrento a 1-0 lead.

They doubled their lead in the 24th minute when a deflected Witschge shot was turned into the net by prolific striker Quinncroft.

Quinncroft added a third goal for Sorrento in the 35th minute and, as the foul count continued to rise, Armadale’s Faustin Machoci received the first yellow card for a hard sliding tackle in the 40th.

Armadale’s Kyle King snared a consolation goal in the 44th, sliding a free kick into the bottom left corner.

The second half would retain the first’s physicality, with Sorrento’s Jordan Brown receiving a yellow card for a sliding tackle in the 54th.

In the 59th minute, Sorrento standout Salter rounded the keeper, only to have his shot blocked by Armadale defenders.

Sorrento grabbed their 4th goal in the 65th minute when a shot forced Craggs to deflect the ball across goal, where Scott Bulloch pounced to convert.

Craggs would continue to have a busy game, being forced into an excellent close range save by Reece Vittiglia in the 76th. However, he could do little to prevent Salter from rounding him to score Sorrento’s fifth in the 78th.

The fifth goal would prove to be the final significant act of the game. Armadale’s frustration was palpable and lead to two further bookings, Nathan Costello (84th minute) and substitute Beau Rahim (90th Minute).

The result leaves Sorrento flying high as table leaders with ten points, while Armadale sits in the bottom half with one win.
