Night Series Kicks Off

Football West News

The QBE Night Series kicks off on Friday with a highly anticipated match between top-flight newcomers Joondalup United and Mandurah City at Percy Doyle Reserve in Duncraig.

Sorrento and Perth Glory will clash in the first Night Series match at 6.30pm before Joondalup and Mandurah go head-to-head at 8.30pm.

All matches will be played under a knockout format, adding a thrilling element to every game. Matches that are level after normal time will be settled via a penalty shoot-out.

Mandurah were beaten to top spot in the All Flags State League Division One by Joondalup last season and will be looking to draw first blood as both clubs prepare for their inaugural PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues season.

Joondalup have signed former Sorrento midfielder Matt Sparrow, who will combine playing duties with a coaching role this season having completed his B Licence in recent months. His appearance on Friday is subject to a transfer clearance.

Joondalup coach Nick Jennings told the club’s website of his delight at signing the former Scunthorpe United and Brighton midfielder, who will play a key role for the club in the NPL.

“He’ll be an asset on and off the field using his experience, his leadership and his knowledge of the game having been a pro since he was 16-year-old,” Jennings told joondalupunitedfc.com.au.

On Sunday, Floreat Athena will take on Balcatta at E&D Litis Stadium in Mt Hawthorn at 5:30pm before Bayswater City and Perth SC take to the pitch at 7:30pm.

Also on Sunday, Dalmatinac Park in Spearwood plays host to Armadale and Subiaco at 5:30pm before ECU Joondalup take on Cockburn City at 7:30pm.

The draw for the quarter-finals, which will include Inglewood United and Stirling Lions, who drew a first-round bye, will be conducted on Monday, January 23.
